What is Shannon information?

Abstract: Although the use of the word 'information', with different meanings, can be traced back to antique and medieval texts (see Adriaans 2013), it is only in the 20 th century that the term begins to acquire the present-day sense. Nevertheless, the pervasiveness of the notion of information both in our everyday life and in our scientific practice does not imply the agreement about the content of the concept. As Luciano Floridi (2010Floridi ( , 2011 stresses, it is a polysemantic concept associated with different ph… Show more

“…Information is variously and sometimes imprecisely defined in science ( Capurro and Hjørland, 2003 ), its meaning is still strongly contested ( Lombardi et al, 2016 ; Roederer, 2016 ), and many people regard it as being to some extent subjective, relativistic, or observer-dependent ( von Foerster, 2003 ; Deacon, 2010 ; Werner, 2011 ; Logan, 2012 ; Searle, 2013 ; de-Wit et al, 2016 ). The term is often used in science colloquially (meaning ‘what is conveyed by an arrangement of things’) or “intuitively” ( Erra et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Shannon's work introduced, for the first time, a number of key ideas that shaped the field of information theory, including the concept of digitizing information into binary digits known as “bits,” the formal architecture of communication systems, and source coding, which deals with the efficiency of data representation (Shannon, 1948 ). In short, the scope of information theory focuses on the transmission, processing, storage, and receiving of messages (Aftab et al, 2001 ; Lombardi et al, 2016 ). Although information theory was initially developed for use in communication systems, principally concerning itself with the transmission of telecommunication signals, it is now commonly used in a number of fields such as computer science, engineering, neuroscience and linguistics (Verdu, 1998 ; Xiong et al, 2017 ).…”

“…In particular, nothing in the formalism tells us what the term 'information' refers to within the context of the theory. This fact has led to very different interpretations of the notion of information, even among those who completely agree on the formal aspects of Shannon theory [11][12][13]. At least three interpretations have been proposed so far: epistemic, physical, and syntactical.…”
