Identified as an increasingly pivotal aspect, the benevolent extra-role characteristic of community citizenship behavior contributes to destination development efficiency and social cohesion. Based on the egoistic–altruistic motivation framework, this study investigated three motivations that propel residents to exercise community citizenship behaviors in a positive social contact context, namely self-focused, other-focused, and place-focused motivation. A conceptual model combined with positive contact, personal benefit, sympathetic understanding, place identity, and community citizenship behavior was developed and tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) through data from 366 residents in Kaifeng, China. The findings showed that of the three motivations for community citizenship behaviors, place identity contributed the most, and personal benefits failed to predict community citizenship behaviors. Furthermore, sympathetic understanding with tourists was most fostered by residents from the perception of positive contact with tourists. These findings offer a novel theoretical framework for scholarly investigation and provide practical insights for tourism managers regarding strategies to influence residents’ community citizenship behavior.

The article is devoted to the analysis of linguistic means for describing the communicative strategy of sympathy. The study is based on the interpretation of the communicative strategy as a communication model aimed at planning the speech process. The article describes the linguistic means of expressing the communicative strategy of sympathy in English and the activity of using it. In the list of linguistic means, the following ones are marked with certain productivity: certain lexical items, in particular poor; standardized phrases, clichés, etc. The study analyzes the typical means of expressing sympathy, in particular language constructions, in the Ukrainian language. Some language means of expressing sympathy in the Ukrainian language reinforce the dynamic change of speech dynamics. The specificity of the communicative strategy of sympathy in both English and Ukrainian languages is characterized based on fiction. The techniques during the translation of the communicative strategy of sympathy from English to Ukrainian have been determined.

Scholarly research on emotions tackles various domains, among which opposition to immigration ranks as socially and politically critical. While earlier literature captures distinct aspects of this domain, certain emotions are less studied than others, primarily compassion. By focusing on the unique role of compassion in comparison with anger and anxiety, we tackle how and under which conditions compassion changes social distancing and political preferences regarding refugees. Drawing on representative data collected in Turkey—the country with the highest number of Syrian refugees—we test whether feelings of compassion toward refugees can hold back the escalation in opposition to immigration as a result of heightened threat. Our results show that compassion functions as the key to lowering the negative effects of perceived threat in shaping refugees' social and political integration.
