What makes companies pursue an Open Science strategy?

Abstract: Whereas recent scholarly research has provided many insights about universities engaging in commercial activities, there is still little empirical evidence regarding the opposite phenomenon of companies disseminating scientific knowledge. Our paper aims to fill this gap and explores the motivations of firms that disclose research outcomes in a scientific format. Besides considering an internal firm dimension, we focus particularly on knowledge sourcing from academic institutions and the appropriability regime … Show more

“…In turn, when it comes to the regional level, the scope and potential societal and economic impact of U-I interactions is increasingly assessed, and the corresponding policy developments need to be considered (Mathies and Slaughter 2013;Shah and Pahnke 2014). Related substreams of this cluster address the effectiveness of legal appropriation instruments regarding the scientific outputs of universities (Simeth and Raffo 2013) and the development of specific, locally adjusted strategies, considering the aggregated regional and national resources (Svensson et al 2012). …”

“…This results in indirect ways of knowledge spillover having considerable stronger effect on the understanding of the scientific regime than direct ways. Therefore, informal communication with scientists will help innovators to better understand the scientific disciplines (Liebeskind et al 1996;Simeth and Raffo 2013). To enable such communication, being located in proximity to scientific research institutes such as universities or government-sponsored research institutes helps as it increases the chance of formulating social networks between scientists and engineers (DeBresson and Amesse 1991; Anselin et al 1997).…”

“…To surmount the technological problems, which can arise in the invention process, and to realize creative ideas, it is important to effectively recombine and apply knowledge from more than one source such as knowledge from scientific fields (Caraça et al 2009;Simeth and Raffo 2013). Actually, industrial engineers seek the advice of scientists to solve their technological problems (Gibbons and Johnston 1974) and this scientific searching activity can increase efficiency at the invention level .…”
