What Science Communication Scholars Think About Training Scientists to Communicate

Abstract: The current study involved an attempted census of first and second authors from five key journals across the subfields of science, health, environment, and risk communication between 2003 and 2008. Of those responding (n = 320), 80% describe themselves as a communication expert. Of these experts (n = 255), 57% report conducting formal training for bench scientists and engineers, science regulators, medical personnel, or journalists. The main focus of training was in basic communication theories and models. The… Show more

“…Yet, few researchers are trained in effective science communication (Besley and Tanner, 2011), and science communication research is typically not standard fare for geoscientists (Stewart and Nield, 2013). There is a wealth of literature on effective science communication in general (e.g.…”

“…Thus, many of us were comfortable with the need to teach stakeholders the intricacies of the science. On the other hand, few SNAMP participants were university students and as often noted, scientists are not always the most skilled public communicators Besley and Tanner 2011). In this regard, SNAMP greatly benefitted from the inclusion of cooperative extension specialists and advisors among our principal investigators.…”
