When Computers Can Kill—Two Unusual Cases of “E-Thrombosis”

Abstract: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common and potentially fatal vascular event when it leads to pulmonary embolism. Occurring as part of the broader phenomenon of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), DVT classically arises when Virchow's triad of hypercoagulability, changes in blood flow (e.g. stasis) and endothelial dysfunction, is fulfilled. Although such immobilisation is most often seen in bedbound patients and travellers on long distance flights, there is increasing evidence that prolonged periods of work or leisur… Show more

“…Thirteen articles were included in the current review (Table 2 and Supplementary table 2), including four prospective studies [36][37][38][39] with large study size (up to 389,530 participants) and about 20 years of follow-up, four case-control studies, two conducted in the same initial population 40 41 including respectively 97 and 192 cases, one among insured bank staff 42 , and one from clinic services 43 and five case-reports [44][45][46][47][48] . All the studies adjusted their analyses on gender and age while other confounders, known as causal risk factors of VTE, were heterogeneously considered.…”

“…Braithwaite et al described the case of a 42-year-old man who developed bilateral pulmonary emboli accompanied with right heart strain, after having spent 48 consecutive hours playing on-line computer games, leaving his chair just for toilet breaks (12). More recently, Doctor and Seth described two other cases of venous thrombosis developing after prolonged computer use (13). The former case was a 50-year-old male, software professional, who developed a DVT in the iliac, femoral and popliteal veins of the left leg after having worked on his computer for 12 consecutive hours, with less than 4 breaks.…”

“…(10) Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a person sits for at least 8 hours and at least 3 hours without interruption. (10,13,20) After 3 hours of sitting without interruption, blood flow disturbance will occur. (20) Decreased blood flow will cause hypoxia, activate blood clotting factors, and cause a hypercoagulable state that triggers thrombus *Chi-Square test the coagulation pathway, thereby increasing the risk of DVT.…”

“…(12) Nausheen et al reported a case of DVT in Singapore in men aged 50 years due to prolonged sitting in front of a computer while working for an average of 12 hours per day. (13) However, Johannesen et al's study in Denmark on a population aged 20-65 years stated that there was no relationship between sitting duration and risk of DVT. (14) Body mass index is also closely related to the risk of DVT.…”
