White-lipped peccaries are recorded at Iguaçu National Park after 20 years

Abstract: The white-lipped peccary (WLP) is the most endangered ungulate in the Neotropics. In the recent years, this species has undergone a large reduction in range size and experienced the loss of several populations. An emblematic case was the local extinction of this species from the Iguaçu National Park (INP) in the mid-1990s. After the report of this particular WLP disappearance, surveys conducted along the 2000s confirmed its absence in the park. However, in 2016, after 20 years of previous reports, we obtained … Show more

“…In the larger Iguaçu National Park and adjacent northern Misiones province in Argentina, WLPs disappeared around 1995. Years of surveys confirmed their absence until several individuals were detected with camera traps in 2016, likely immigrating from nearby forested areas in Argentina 22 . In Turvo State Park (Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil), WLPs disappeared in 1980 and have not been seen since then (S1).…”

“…Study areas varied from 8 to 181,000 ha (more details about study sites see Supplemental Material). Araucaria moist forest fragments, in general, experienced timber extraction and reduction in seed predator and disperser communities (Brocardo and Cândido-Jr, 2012), while two of our continuous areas represented more intact seed predator community (Iguaçu National Park and Campos do Jordão State Park) (Brocardo et al, 2017), and a third continuous area (Alto- Table S1. Montana Reserve) exhibited an impoverished native fauna composition, with the presence of the exotic and invasive wild boar (Sus scrofa) (Table S2).…”

“…In the larger Iguaçu National Park, also in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, and adjacent northern Misiones province in Argentina, WLPs ceased to be detected around 1995. Years of surveys confirmed their absence until several individuals were detected with camera traps in 2016, likely immigrating from nearby forested areas in Argentina [ 39 ]. In Turvo State Park (Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil), WLPs ceased to be detected in 1980 and have not been seen since then ( S2 Table ).…”
