Wind shear estimation model using load measurement of wind turbine tower and surrogate model

Abstract: A wind shear estimation method based on fore-aft moment is proposed to estimate wind shear strength without a Doppler lidar. We construct wind shear estimation models (WSEMs) using surrogate models whose input is the time-averaged fore-aft moment and various supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system data.Learning data for the WSEMs are generated by numerical simulation or field measurement of a real turbine using SCADA, strain gauges, and Doppler lidar. By using simulation data, we construct 20 W… Show more

“…In real settings, estimates of the mean hub‐height wind speed and standard deviation are assumed available from nacelle anemometers. Wind shear profile can be made inferred through near‐by LiDAR installations, nacelle‐mounted LiDAR or post‐processing of certain loads measurements as suggested in Namura 79 …”

“…Others have proposed using the rotor as a sensor of inferred inflow velocity states, averaged over rotor plane sectors, based on real-time load and power measurements. The goal was to inform operational control decisions to maximize power and redirect turbine wakes [1,2,15]. This paper essentially flips the inputs and outputs of the prior work, as the presented process starts with array flow models instead of real-time turbine load measurements.…”
