Wireless Sensor Networks: Applications and Challenges

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) allow innovative applications and involve non-conventional models for the design of procedures owing to some limitations. Due to the necessity for low device complication and low consumption of energy, an appropriate equilibrium among communication and signal processing abilities should be instituted. This stimulates an enormous effort in research actions, standardisation procedure, as well as manufacturing investments on this aspect since the preceding years. Therefore, this ch… Show more

“…The following types of disruptive innovations were analyzed (and it has been estimated that they have an important impact on future smart factory development): (1) technological changes, (2) the emergence of innovative products, business models and solutions, and (3) organizational culture. These concepts enable manufacturing enterprises to reduce costs, improve flexibility and productivity, enhance quality and increase the speed of business processes (Brunelli et al, 2017;Junaid, 2020).…”

“…Their scope is boundless, catering to diverse applications ranging from surveillance, medical and healthcare services to smart cities. However, the predominant use of sensor networks revolves around environmental monitoring and the detection of specific phenomena [8]. The suggested approach involves a combination of stationary and mobile nodes working together to gather the targeted data within the designated environment.…”

“…For example, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are systems composed of devices distributed within a defined area based on specific application requirements. In these systems, devices must support wireless communication, computation, and sensing capabilities [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. There are many possible environments where WSNs are deployed, and, in some cases, the number of nodes contending to transmit in the shared channel may be relatively low.…”
