WorkWays: Interacting with Scientific Workflows

Abstract: SUMMARYWorkWays is a science gateway that supports human-in-the-loop scientific workflows. Human-workflow interactions are enabled by a dynamic Input Output (IO) model, which allows users to insert data into, or export data out of, a continuously running workflow. WorkWays has been used to solve a number of scientific problems where the user wishes to examine intermediate results in order to interact with the computation as the workflow progresses. This interactive capability not only provides better insights … Show more

“…In this work, we mostly focused on the first three, considering human adaptation as the core of computational steering and the one we mostly contributed with. As most related contributions to putting the human in the loop of HPC workflows [2,26,27], we focused on the efforts for engineering the backend enabling technology for user steering in an HPC workflow. More specifically, we contributed with allowing users to steer data reductions in scientific workflows online, focusing on providing a consistent execution within a data reduction, managing provenance data of user steering actions, and minimizing performance overheads in the HPC system (discussed in Section 7.4).…”

“…In [49] a modelas-you-go approach has been proposed to enhance the classical workflow approach when tackling scientifical simulation challenges and the need for adaptation during workflow execution. WorkWays [40] allows for human-in-the-loop interaction and has already implemented a project involving CFD. SWAMP [54] is a Scientific Workflow System built entirely on composition of web services.…”
