Xanthenedione Derivatives, New Promising Antioxidant and Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitor Agents

Abstract: Natural and synthetic xanthone derivatives are well-known for their ability to act as antioxidants and/or enzyme inhibitors. This paper aims to present a successful synthetic methodology towards xanthenedione derivatives and the study of their aromatization to xanthones. Additionally their ability to reduce Fe(III), to scavenge DPPH radicals and to inhibit AChE was evaluated. The results demonstrated that xanthenedione derivative 5e, bearing a catechol unit, showed higher reduction capacity than BHT and simila… Show more

“…Therefore, synthesis of multi‐functionalized oxo‐tetrahydroindoles by MCRs can be considered as an important achievement . A further motivation of this work is that although a number of strategies were proposed for the synthesis of xanthenedione, reports on the employment of MCRs reaction using heterogeneous acid catalysts for the synthesis are relatively few …”

“…In this context, a variety of quinazolonones and quinolones have been reported in the literature . Among them, quinolones with xanthene and acridine scaffolds are an important class of heterocyclic compounds which possess wide spectrum of biological activities like antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, anti‐inflammatory Apart from these, some xanthenes have also been employed in fluorescent and chiroptical molecular switches …”

“…Also, xanthenes, in particular xanthenediones, have received great attention because of their wide range of biological properties, their use in laser technologies and their presence in dyes . Xanthenediones are generally synthesized by condensation of aromatic aldehydes with 5,5‐dimethyl‐1,3‐cyclohexanedione (dimedone) using various promoting agents …”
