This paper introduces a generalized structure for the optimal development of an adventure serious game. Present pandemic conditions induce transformations in educational methods, of which games are an attractive option. A serious game is an interdisciplinary team project for which our structure allows all members to interact irrespective of computer science proficiency. A method of interaction between unified blocks is proposed, consisting of five blocks that cover all the characteristics necessary to describe a serious game. The unified blocks are: rules, characters, scenarios, communication and score. The blocks are divided into sub-blocks that detail the characteristics of the game. The “luck” sub-block allows the real-life non-predictability dimension to be included in the game. During the interaction of the sub-blocks the different contexts of the game are created. Each context has a specific educational content goal that the player must go through. The interactions between sub-blocks are described in an XML file, common working environment for all the interdisciplinary members of the design team involves graphic designers, programmers, game designers and experts in the content to be transmitted. The principle of unified blocks is applied to the fifteen contexts of an existing game, JUSEGU, for which five new contexts are included and implemented in this paper to increase its educational content.

One of the difficulties faced when using XML as the data storage structure is query inefficiency. Therefore, various indexing methods have been proposed. When designing indexing methods, the first step is to choose the labeling method. Some labeling methods can work well; however, if they cannot effectively support update operations, their use is subject to considerable limitations. Most of the update-friendly labeling methods proposed in the literature assign a unique label to each node in XML and provide an expandable mechanism for future insertion. However, they encounter some difficulties, such as increasing the index space, more difficulty in evaluating the relationships between nodes, and increasing the complexity of labels. In this paper, we introduce a novel update-friendly labeling scheme called branch map, which records the correspondence between parent and child nodes instead of assigning a label to each node. The space required for the index is reduced considerably. More importantly, the branch map can maintain the profile as if it was encoded initially, even after being frequently updated. This paper also proposes a compact indexing scheme called UCIS-X. Experimental results indicate that UCIS-X performs well in terms of index size, query, and update efficiency.

Automated videogame mechanics generation with XVGDL

The automatic generation of game mechanics is nowadays one of the most complex challenges within procedural content generation (PCG), even being considered by itself as automatic game generation in the literature. Previous works have contributed with research papers related to PCG in general, and, in particular, the generation of game mechanics from a specification written in a game description language (GDL). One primary reference is the Ludii general game system that allows to generate new mechanics for two-player combinatorial (board) games. Ludii manages game specifications written in a GDL that can be directly represented in a tree structure. These structures are then evolved by means of genetic programming (GP), a well-known bio-inspired optimization technique, to produce new game rules. Now, this paper extends the approach centered on 2-player games and proposed in the Ludii general game system to n-player videogames. The paper describes a system to automatically generate videogame mechanics. The starting point is a videogame specification written in the XML-based videogame description language (XVGDL). Similarly to Ludii, this videogame specification can be directly translated to rule tree structures that can be evolved by GP. The viability of this approach is demonstrated by experimentation with practical examples. The experiments show how it is possible to automatically produce and evaluate a number of distinct versions (that differ in their mechanics) of a videogame that was originally specified in XVGDL.
