Yield response of four popular banana varieties from southeast Asia to infection with a population of Radopholus similis from Davao, Philippines

Abstract: The yield response of four popular banana cultivars from southeast Asia to infection with a population of Radopholus similis collected from banana in Davao, Philippines, was investigated in a microplot experiment. Bunch weight reduction of nematodeinfected plants ranged from 25 to 68% for all four southeast Asian banana cultivars and Grand Nain (AAA), the susceptible reference cultivar included in the study. The banana cv. Latundan (AAB) had a nematode population density of 185, 38 and 27 nematodes at 6 months… Show more

“…Herradura et al [61] evaluated the root necrosis index for R. similis following the method of Speijer and De Waele [29]. The extent of root damage was described by the following scores: 1 if the roots were all healthy, 2 if most roots were healthy, 3 if most roots were dead, and 4 if all the roots were dead.…”

“…The extent of root damage was described by the following scores: 1 if the roots were all healthy, 2 if most roots were healthy, 3 if most roots were dead, and 4 if all the roots were dead. This scoring has been used for evaluating damage caused by R. similis [42,69] as well as H. multicinctus [21,39].…”

“…Plant diseases have been a major problem for both the export industry and producers serving domestic markets. Besides the recurrence of Foc TR4, the following diseases were reported: Moko, black sigatoka, (Stover, 1986), nematodes (Davide, 1988; Herradura et al, 2012; Aggangan et al, 2013), and bunchy top (Kohnen et al, 2013; Molina et al, 2009). The Foc TR4 had been reported in Mindanao since 2009 and affected a range of banana production systems located in the area.…”

“…Sin embargo, en estudios realizados por Marín et al (1999), en Costa Rica, obtuvieron reducciones del 4,8% en la AP de Musa AAA 'Grand Naine', a los 56 días después de la inoculación con 200 R. similis. Así mismo, Herradura et al (2012) encontraron reducciones del 8,2% y 25% en la AP en dos cultivares de Musa AAA, del Sudeste Asiático en respuesta de las plantas a la infección con 1.000 R. similis, en etapa de floración y cosecha.…”
