Zika Virus Infection With Prolonged Maternal Viremia and Fetal Brain Abnormalities

Abstract: (N Engl J Med. 2016;374:2142–2151) Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, is associated with intrauterine or perinatal transmission and increased risk of having a newborn with microcephaly. In the present study, the authors present findings on a case of congenital ZIKV infection in a pregnancy that was terminated at 21 weeks gestation.

“…Next, we analyzed whether CLR01 was active against epidemic ZIKV strains. The FB-GWUH-2016 isolate was derived in 2016 from the fetus of a pregnant Finnish tourist returning from South America (Driggers et al, 2016), and the PRVABC-59 isolate represents the current American epidemic strain, isolated in 2015 from a Puerto Rican patient (Lanciotti et al, 2016). Both ZIKV strains were exposed to CLR01 upon infection of Vero E6 cells.…”

“…In these recent outbreaks outside of Africa, transmission is believed to be primarily a human-mosquitohuman cycle with A. aegypti as the primary mosquito vector [116]. However, non-vector-borne modes of transmission have been reported: sexual [117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132][133] including male to male [134] and female to male [135], perinatal and intrauterine [136][137][138][139][140][141][142][143][144], breast feeding [136,144,145] and blood transfusion [43,[146][147][148][149].…”
