Zinc and smoking habits in the setting of hypertension in a Spanish populations

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between trace and toxic amounts of zinc (Zn) in biological samples (blood and urine) and the smoking habits of hypertensive patients and healthy control subjects in Valladolid (Spain). In order to compare biological samples, the concentrations of these samples were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The limits of detection for Zn in blood plasma ranged between 4.22 and 17.34 μmol l(-1) and were <0.08 μmol g(-1) creatinine in… Show more

“…Table 3 provides the Zn serum/urine quotient values which, as the literature indicates [ 10 , 23 ] can be used as an indication of hypertension. This pathological situation, in combination with the smoking habit, is associated with high zinc levels in urine and lower levels in serum.…”

“…The total quantity of carcinogenic substances in tobacco smoke varies from 1 to 3 µg per cigarette [ 9 ]. It has been identified that smoking modifies the levels of zinc in the body [ 10 ]. Many studies [ 11 ] have confirmed the relationship between smoking and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.…”

“…We grounded our investigation on the results of the cross-sectional “Hortega Study” [ 28 , 29 ]; a two-stage, nested, population-based, epidemiological case-control monitoring pilot study carried out in an adult population sample in the province of Valladolid (Spain). We randomly selected 20% (n = 35,901) of the population and stratified it according to hypertension and non-hypertension, and also to age and gender.…”

“…The observed slight elevation in zinc levels in the waterpipe smokers is of less clinical significance as health consequences of zinc exposure are observed at much higher levels than that observed in the current study. It is worth to mention that some studies in the literature have reported significantly low zinc levels in blood samples in smokers than non-smokers (Suarez-Varela et al 2015). However, in the current study, waterpipe smoking is associated with slightly elevated plasma and saliva zinc levels.…”
