Purpose: To compare the effects of Neurodynamic Sliding Technique with static stretching on hamstring flexibility in healthy young football players with short hamstring syndrome. Methods: 30 male football players within age group 18–25 years with short hamstring syndrome i.e. initial passive straight leg raise (SLR) ≤ 75° participated in the study. Participants were excluded if they exhibited any hamstring injury within the past year or presence of any history of neurological or orthopedic disorder affecting the lower extremities (e.g. Peripheral neuropathy, femur fracture, meniscal injury, low back pain, etc.) the participants were randomly assigned to either Neurodynamic Sliding Technique group or static stretching group. The same researcher provided the intervention to both the groups for three sessions on three different days over a period of one week. Passive SLR was measured pre-intervention, immediately after 1st session and after three sessions. Results: Statistical analysis (p < 0.05) revealed significant improvement for both the groups but no statistical difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Thus, both the techniques are equally effective to improve hamstring flexibility in football players with short hamstring syndrome.
Purpose: To determine the immediate effect of kinesiology taping in treating undisplaced rib fracture pain. Method: The study is a retrospective in which 10 Patients (5 females and 5 males) with 1 or 2 undisplaced middle rib fractured (5th, 6th, 7th) were included. The age group of the patients was 27–57 years. The diagnosis was made by the orthopedic surgeon and referred to Institute of Kinesiology Taping. Numeric pain rating scale readings were obtained and documented before and after the taping session. Results: A significant decrease in pain before and after the kinesiology taping was found both while deep breathing ([Formula: see text]0.001) and during coughing ([Formula: see text]0.001). The Mean[Formula: see text] S.D of NPRS reading in case of pre and post taping for deep breathing was 5.7[Formula: see text]0.95 and 4.4[Formula: see text]0.84, respectively and that for coughing was 7.2[Formula: see text]0.63 and 4.7[Formula: see text]1.16, respectively. Conclusion: Kinesiology taping has immediate effect in treating undisplaced middle rib fracture pain.
Objectives: To study, the bacterial profile in cases of neonatal sepsis admitted to the neonatal nursery or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to identify the risk factors for early-onset neonatal sepsis. Design: Retrospective survey of hospital records from January 2012 to December 2012. Setting: A neonatal unit of a rural medical college hospital. Subjects: All inborn and outborn neonates who either had clinical signs of sepsis or were born to mothers with risk factors for sepsis and underwent a sepsis screen. Neonatal sepsis was defined as positive blood culture in babies younger than 1 month of age who had clinical signs of sepsis or had maternal risk factors for sepsis. Results: 396 neonates were screened for sepsis during the study period, of which 64 (16%) were culture positive. Of these, 42 (65.6%) had early-onset sepsis while 22 (34.3%) had late-onset sepsis (LOS). There were 6 deaths among those who had sepsis (9.3%). The predominant organisms in both early and LOS were Klebsiella and Staphylococcus aureus followed by Escherichia coli.
Conclusion:The pattern of isolates is more or less similar to that seen in other NICU across the country. Klebsiella and S. aureus were two of the commonest organisms isolated in our study.
Unilateral microspherophakia without systemic associations is a rare condition and so is congenital palsy of the superior division of the third nerve. Here, we report both these rarities together in a 32-year-old male who had microspherophakia in his right eye and congenital palsy of the superior division of the third nerve in his left eye. The intraocular pressure (IOP) in the right eye was normal with no glaucomatous change in the fundus, but the patient had developed cataractous changes in the microspherophakia lens. The left eye of the patient had low vision due to congenital ptosis which led to stimulus deprivation amblyopia.
