Entrepreneurship and intellectualism are usually seen in different forms, but one can reinforce the other. Intellectual competencies have become quite useful in an increasingly complex context of business activities and thus have the potential of reinforcing entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is one of the factors of production. The challenge for intellectual entrepreneurial organizations therefore lies less in the creation of esoteric ideas for the shelves, but collaboration with enabling agents for converting creativity in form of the knowledge assets to innovation and wisdom for it to become more relevant in promoting sustainable economic growth. However, the legal protection of intellectual property rights is sine qua non to successful implementation and long-term entrepreneurship sustainability on the platform of intellectualism.
This paper examines the relationship between firms’ ownership structure and financial performance in Nigeria, using a sample of thirty listed companies between 2001 and 2008. Using pooled OLS as a method of estimation and after controlling for four firm-specific characteristics, our results show a negative and significant relationship between ownership structure (director shareholding) and firm financial performance (ROE). This is in support of Entrenchment hypothesis. Also, our study does not support a non-linear relationship between ownership structure and firm performance.
The study investigates the influence of cooperative financing on the performance and survival of micro scale businesses, in Ogun State, Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted to generate crosssectional data, using a structured questionnaire as the research instrument. From a population of 1,165,848 a sample size of 384 was obtained using the Raosoft sapling size formulae. Regression analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that cooperatively sourced finance has a positive and significant effect on operational performance of micro scale enterprises but no significant effect on business survival. This implies that survival of micro scale enterprises is beyond financing. The study recommends that cooperative societies, beyond financing should assist members in the area of general management of activities such as records keeping to improve the operational performance as well as the survival rate of businesses in Ogun State, Nigeria.
