Research and practice is ongoing in to the affective impact of music of people living with advanced dementia and the relationship to positive wellbeing. Projects have primarily employed familiarity as a means to encourage engagement, such as using familiar tunes, songs, or instruments. This project explored the response of people living with advanced dementia to an innovative gestural electronic instrument, The Airsticks TM. The engagement promoted creative musical improvisation and resulted in an highly emotive response from one particular participant and revealing the ongoing existence of a creative impulse.
This paper discusses findings from a survey on interfaces for making electronic music.We invited electronic music makers of varying experience to reflect on their practice and setup and to imagine and describe their ideal interface for music-making. We also asked them to reflect on the state of gestural controllers, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in their practice. We had 118 people respond to the survey, with 40.68% professional musicians, and 10.17% identifying as living with a disability or access requirement. Results highlight limitations of music-making setups as perceived by electronic music makers, reflections on how imagined novel interfaces could address such limitations, and positive attitudes towards ML and AI in general.
The field of Accessible Digital Musical Instruments (ADMIs) is growing rapidly, with instrument designers recognising that adaptations to existing Digital Musical Instruments (DMIs) can foster inclusive music making. ADMIs offer opportunities to engage with a wider range of sounds than acoustic instruments. Furthermore, gestural ADMIs free the music maker from relying on screen, keyboard, and mouse-based interfaces for engaging with these sounds. This brings greater opportunities for exploration, improvisation, empowerment, and flow through music making for people with disability and the communities of practice they are part of. This article argues that developing ADMIs from existing DMIs can speed up the process and allow for more immediate access for those with diverse needs. It presents three case studies of a gestural DMI, originally designed by the first author for his own creative practice, played by people with disability in diverse contexts. The article shows that system-based considerations that enabled an expert percussionist to achieve virtuoso performances with the instrument required minimal hardware and software changes to facilitate greater inclusivity. Understanding the needs of players and customising the system-based movement to sound mappings was of far greater importance in making the instrument accessible.
Human collaboration with systems within the Computational Creativity (CC) field is often restricted to shallow interactions, where the creative processes, of systems and humans alike, are carried out in isolation, without any (or little) intervention from the user, and without any discussion about how the unfolding decisions are taking place. Fruitful co-creation requires a sustained ongoing interaction that can include discussions of ideas, comparisons to previous/other works, incremental improvements and revisions, etc. For these interactions, communication is an intrinsic factor. This means giving a voice to CC systems and enabling two-way communication channels between them and their users so that they can: explain their processes and decisions, support their ideas so that these are given serious consideration by their creative collaborators, and learn from these discussions to further improve their creative processes. For this, we propose a set of design principles for CC systems that aim at supporting greater cocreation and collaboration with their human collaborators.
