One of the most common parenting practice found in Kupang city is harsh parenting. This type of parenting put less focus in understanding children's opinions, feelings and hopes and more in physical and verbal punishment such as spanking, yelling and slapping. This study aims to explore children's perception on their parents' parenting practice with three main objectives, what do their parents do when they do something wrong, what causes their parents to do that and what is their feelings and hopes for their parents. Participants in this study were recruited from 12 kindergartens in Kupang City. Data collection were done in two months using interview session on 26 boys (43%) and 34 girls (56%) aged five to six years old. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results shown that there are three main reactions from parents when their children made mistake, that is physical punishment, verbal punishment, and permissive punishment. The antecedent of these responses identified are internal factors from the children (e.g. children refuses to eat or sleep) and external factors (e.g. parents under influence of alcohol, conflict between parents). Fathers, mothers and even other caregivers such as grandmothers are identified to be involved in harsh parenting. Children admitted several negative feelings such as feeling sad, alone, afraid and also often expressed their emotions in crying. There are six hopes from children for their parents, they long for physical contact, verbal expression, non verbal expression, spending time together, gifts and also sometimes they want nothing at all. Based on this study, parents in Kupang City could use more knowledge and skills to understand young children and how to discipline them without resorting to harsh parenting practices.
Competent teacher can improve their abilities in managing classroom according to their students’ needs. Classroom management in early childhood education and development (ECED) post really depends on the teacher. This article aims to understand classroom management as tools of playing and studying for children in kindergarten. This study used qualitative descriptibe approach and triangulation was used to ensure the data quality. Between for class observed, class B1 was identified as the most ideal. Good ventilation and lighting, neat placement of equipments and class tools, not blocking air circulation, according to area and not blocking children play zone, also neat class decoration and clean and comfort class describe this overall class management quality.
AbstrakFenomena dalam penelitian ini adalah meningkatnya jumlah wanita yang berperan sebagai ibu single parent dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan anak dalam keluarga. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui peran ibu sebagai single parent dalam keluarga di Kelurahan Lasiana. Pendekatan penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Jumlah Informan dalam penelitian ini adalah 5 orang ibu single parent. Teknik penentuan informan melalui purposive sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Analisis data yang digunakan dengan proses reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan (verifikasi). Hasil menggambarkan ibu single parent di kelurahan Lasiana menjalankan peran ganda secara baik dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan anak dalam keluarga. Adapun pelbagai peran/fungsi ibu sebagai single parent dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan anak di keluarga adalah dalam fungsi afeksi, fungsi sosialisasi, fungsi proteksi, fungsi pendidikan secara keseluruhan berjalan dengan baik. Namun pada fungsi ekonomi tidak berjalan dengan baik disebabkan ibu single parent belum bisa dalam memenuhi kebutuhan keluarga karena tidak memiliki pekerjaan tetap. Disarankan bagi semua ibu singel parent agar mampu menjalankan perannya secara maksimal untuk memenuhi kebutuhan anak usia dini. AbstractThe phenomenon in this study is the increasing number of women taking the role of single mothers in fulfilling their children’s needs in families. The objective of this study is to reveal the role of mothers as single parent in families in Lasiana Village. The approach of the study utilised a descriptive qualitative. The technique of informant selection was carried out through purposive sampling. The data collection technique was conducted through observation, interview, and documentation. The data analysis was carried out by the process of data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The result of the study obtained a depiction of single mothers at Lasiana village carrying out the dual role well in fulfilling the children’s need in families. There are several roles/functions of mothers as single parent in fulfilling children’s needs in families such as affection function, socialising, protection, and education which are carried out well in general. However, the economic function is not carried out well as the others due to the single mothers have lack of capability to fulfil families’ needs as a result of having impermanent jobs. It is suggested that all mothers as single parent to be able to carry out their roles successfully to fulfil the needs of the children.
