The article is devoted to the possibility of considering the existing classifications and definitions of online platforms. The features of educational platforms are considered with the aim of developing ideas about their essential characteristics in order to categorical define this phenomenon. Some important criteria for evaluating these platforms are given. Based on the analysis of the collected information, the author proposes the definition of an online educational platform (and a foreign online platform to consider the variety of such a platform if analyzing the inclusion of this element in the Russian educational system).
