Issues regarding the human aging process have become the focus of discussions and investigations around the world. Inevitably, this process is associated with physiological changes such as modifications in body composition that are related to progressive declines in the biological function as well as the presence of chronic and locomotor impairment conditions, which besides life-threatening risk, pose a challenge to the elderly independence and autonomy. The proposal of an active aging has been strengthened with training programs that seek to improve physical fitness. There are several factors that comprise physical conditioning such as: aerobic resistance, body composition; muscular strength, localized muscular endurance, neuromotor abilities and flexibility, which are important components to maintain the independence of the elderly, since there is direct influence on the functional autonomy. Within these components, the musculoskeletal system is considered the core of the elderly physical health, which consists of three major pillars: muscular strength, aerobic resistance and flexibility. Although there are a considerable number of tests that evaluate physical conditioning, intending to optimize and facilitate the diagnostic evaluations for a satisfactory prescription, it was necessary to compile a battery of tests that contemplated variables of the physical fitness of the elderly to enhance evaluation, prescription and supervision of the exercise programs proposed by health professionals. With this in mind, the Latin American Maturity Development Group (GDLAM) sought to associate a battery of tests that could approximate the reality of activities performed in daily life. From this compilation of tests, it was possible to measure the physical fitness index and functional capacity of the active elderly population.
Introduction Physical exercise has been recommended as a non-pharmacological strategy for preventing and controlling hypertension. Objective To verify chronic cardiovascular and muscle strength adaptations in hypertensive women who underwent 12 weeks of concurrent training (CT) in different orders. Methods Twenty hypertensive women were randomly assigned into 2 groups: resistance exercise-endurance group (REE; 56.00 ± 5.20 years; 78.95 ± 8.28 kg; 155.10 ± 5.30 cm; 33.00 ± 5.30 kg.m-2) and endurance-resistance exercise group (ERE; 57.10 ± 13.38 years; 76.56 ± 18.87 kg; 155.50 ± 8.18 cm; 31.41 ± 5.84 kg.m-2). The endurance exercise was composed of 3 sets of 4 exercises, with 8-RM loads with a 90-second break between sets and exercises. The resistance exercise lasted for 25 minutes and was of progressive intensity. Muscle strength (8-RM), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and double product were assessed pre- and post-exercise. Results The ANOVA showed significant increases in strength for all exercises (p <0.0001) regardless of the order of the concurrent training (bench press, p = 0.680; leg press, p = 0.244; seated row, p = 0.668; and leg extension, p = 0.257). No significant differences in systolic (p = 0.074) and diastolic blood pressures (p = 0.064) were observed for different CT conditions. However, significant reductions in systolic (p = 0.0001) and diastolic blood pressures (p = 0.006) and double product (p = 0.006) only occurred in the REE group. Conclusion Endurance training and resistance exercise promote significant muscle strength gains after 12 weeks of training regardless of CT order in hypertensive women. Beneficial cardiovascular responses (SBP, DBP, and RPP) were also observed when endurance training was initiated. Level of evidence I; Therapeutic Studies - Investigating Treatment Outcomes.
Em virtude do isolamento social decorrente da pandemia provocada pelo COVID-19, a comunidade acadêmica do Instituto Federal do Pará (IFPA) do campus Paragominas elaborou estratégias remotas para minimizar as perdas da rotina estudantil com a suspensão de atividades presenciais. Nesse contexto, este artigo visa apresentar as ações didático-pedagógicas que proporcionaram o engajamento dos discentes matriculados na instituição. As atividades de caráter interativo e elucidativo no âmbito científico, artístico, cultural e social iniciaram em maio de 2020. Essas foram conduzidas através das redes sociais facebook, instagram do campus e pela plataforma digital Google Meet. As práticas pedagógicas realizadas possibilitaram o estímulo, o diálogo com os estudantes e a produção de conhecimento.
