The search for clean, low-cost, and renewable energy sources is one important challenge of modern industrial societies. [1] Hydrogen generated by photochemistry has been identified as a promising energy carrier with high energy density and zero CO 2 emission while being environmentally clean. [2,3] To set up a light-driven and hydrogen based economy an exploration of new materials for eco-friendly, economically viable, stable, and efficient photocatalysts is needed. [4] Noble metals like platinum, iridium, and ruthenium are efficient catalysts for the electrolysis of water, but their scarcity and high-costs limit large-scale technological use. [5] The development of cheap and active catalysts with long-term stability for the hydrogen or oxygen evolution reaction in standard electrolytes is an important goal. A general method to carry out the fluorination of metal oxides with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE, Teflon) waste by spark plasma sintering (SPS) on a minute scale with Teflon is reported. The potential of this new approach is highlighted by the following results. i) The tantalum oxyfluorides Ta 3 O 7 F and TaO 2 F are obtained from plastic scrap without using toxic or caustic chemicals for fluorination. ii) Short reaction times (minutes rather than days) reduce the process time the energy costs by almost three orders of magnitude. iii) The oxyfluorides Ta 3 O 7 F and TaO 2 F are produced in gram amounts of nanoparticles. Their synthesis can be upscaled to the kg range with industrial sintering equipment. iv) SPS processing changes the catalytic properties: while conventionally prepared Ta 3 O 7 F and TaO 2 F show little catalytic activity, SPS-prepared Ta 3 O 7 F and TaO 2 F exhibit high activity for photocatalytic oxygen evolution, reaching photoconversion efficiencies up to 24.7% and applied bias to photoconversion values of 0.86%. This study shows that the materials properties are dictated by the processing which poses new challenges to understand and predict the underlying factors.

Here, we use cryo soft X-ray tomography (cryo-SXT), which delivers 3D ultrastructural volumes of intact cells without chemical fixation or staining, to gain insight about nanoparticle uptake for nanomedicine. We initially used dendritic polyglycerol sulfate (dPGS) with potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications in inflammation. Although dPGS-coated gold nanoparticle (dPGS-AuNP) uptake followed a conventional endocytic/degradative pathway in human lung epithelial cell lines (A549), with cryo-SXT, we detected ∼5% of dPGS-AuNPs in the cytoplasm, a level undetectable by confocal light microscopy. We also observed ∼5% of dPGS-AuNPs in a rarely identified subcellular site, namely, lipid droplets, which are important for cellular energy metabolism. Finally, we also found substantial changes in the quantity of cytoplasmic organelles upon dPGS-AuNP uptake over the 1−6 h incubation period; the number of small vesicles and mitochondria significantly increased, and the number of multivesicular bodies and the number and volume of lipid droplets significantly decreased. Although nearly all organelle numbers at 6 h were still significantly different from controls, most appeared to be returning to normal levels. To test for generality, we also examined cells after uptake of gold nanoparticles coated with a different agent, polyethylenimine (PEI), used for nucleic acid delivery. PEI nanoparticles did not enter lipid droplets, but they induced similar, albeit less pronounced, changes in the quantity of cytoplasmic organelles. We confirmed these changes in organelle quantities for both nanoparticle coatings by confocal fluorescence microscopy. We suggest this cytoplasmic remodeling could reflect a more common cellular response to coated gold nanoparticle uptake.

In this study, we compare combustion ion chromatography (CIC) and high resolution-continuum source-graphite furnace molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-GFMAS) with respect to their applicability for determining organically bound fluorine sum parameters. Extractable (EOF) and adsorbable (AOF) organically bound fluorine as well as total fluorine (TF) were measured in samples from river Spree in Berlin, Germany, to reveal the advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques used as well as the two established fluorine sum parameters AOF and EOF. TF concentrations determined via HR-CS-GFMAS and CIC were comparable between 148 and 270 μg/L. On average, AOF concentrations were higher than EOF concentrations, with AOF making up 0.14–0.81% of TF (determined using CIC) and EOF 0.04–0.28% of TF (determined using HR-CS-GFMAS). The results obtained by the two independent methods were in good agreement. It turned out that HR-CS-GFMAS is a more sensitive and precise method for fluorine analysis compared to CIC. EOF and AOF are comparable tools in risk evaluation for the emerging pollutants per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances; however, EOF is much faster to conduct.

A highly sensitive method for the determination of gadolinium based MRI contrast agents in environmental water samples has been developed using hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The contrast agents used in the present study are Gd-DTPA (Magnevist), Gd-DTPA-BMA (Omniscan), Gd-DOTA (Dotarem), Gd-BOPTA (Multihance) and Gd-BT-DO3A (Gadovist) which represent both classes of linear and macro cyclic and also ionic and non ionic contrast agents. A study of various parameters responsible for the efficient separation was performed and resulted in an optimum mobile phase composition of 20 mmol L À1 ammonium acetate in 60/40 ACN/water mixture at a flow rate of 0.1 mL min À1 in combination with a micro concentric type PFA nebuliser and ICP-MS detection of the 158 Gd isotope. All contrast agents have shown excellent linearity between 0.1 mg L À1 and 100 mg L À1 (R 2 > 0.99) for each MRI contrast agent with RSD values found to be less than 2% for triplicate measurements. The limit of quantification (LOQ) for all contrast agents were found to be less than 100 ng L À1 which allows the developed method to be employed in environmental trace analysis. Enrichment of water samples for the determination of contrast agents was performed by using a surface evaporation approach. The developed method has been applied successfully for the separation and determination of contrast agents in surface and waste water treatment plant samples. The MRI agent speciation results were compared with ICP-MS measurements for the total Gd concentrations.
