Human milk contains a large number of compounds to provide nutrition and defense for the newborn. Among these, oligosaccharides are present in concentrations up to 12 g/L, and their composition varies during lactation. Colostrum from 53 Burkinabe women were collected at the maternity department of St Camille Medical Centre in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso, West Africa). Colostrum from 50 Italian women were collected at the maternity department of St Bambino Hospital in Catania (Catania, East Sicily, Italy). All mothers spontaneously delivered at term. Italian mothers received an injection of the ergot derivative ergotamine after delivery. Ergotamine, notoriously, delays breastfeeding initiation up to 2 to 3 days. Chromatographic separation of colostrum from both Burkinabe and Italian women showed a progressive appearance of oligosaccharides in the first 3 days. Burkinabe women showed high concentrations of 2-fucosyllactose and lower concentrations of lacto-N-fucopentaose I. By contrast, Italian women showed inverted behaviour. A comparable percentage of the secretor genotype for the Lewis blood group phenotype in both Burkinabe and Italian women was found. According to the different ethnicity, different milk oligosaccharide profiles were documented in the present study. 2-Fucosyllactose in milk should be biologically significant for Burkinabe infants because of the high levels found in their mothers' colostrum after the second day of lactation.
Thalassemic (TM) patients are subjected to peroxidative tissue injury because of continuous blood transfusions. It has been documented that circulating LDL from TM patients show marked oxidative modification, that could represent an event leading to atherogenesis. We investigated in 75 beta-TM patients the levels of oxidized LDL antibody (OLAB) to asses their correlation with total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglycerides Apo A-1 and Apo B. OLAB/mg chol-LDL is greater in TM patients than healthy controls (p<0.001). No correlation was found between OLAB and age, sex of patients, mean blood consumption, mean serum ferritin, mean transaminases, PT, PTT, and fibrinogen. A significant positive correlation was found between OLAB and triglycerides in TM patients (p<0.001). Also a significant correlation was found between OLAB/mg chol-LDL and level of triglycerides in TM patients, but not with total cholesterol, LDL and HDL chols, Apo A-1 and Apo B. On the contrary in the healthy controls this correlation between OLAB and OLAB/mg chol-LDL versus triglycerides was negative and not significant. High levels of OLAB/mg chol-LDL in patients with beta-thalassemia, in absence of evident signs of atherosclerosis, suggest some regulatory mechanisms on the lipid peroxidation which modulate the deposition of ox-LDL in the macrophages and support the hypothesis that both serum iron and triglycerides are involved in the pathogenesis of LDL oxidation.

A boy with a lipid storage disease characterized by lamellar ichthyosis, cataracts, hepatosplenomegaly, and leukocyte vacuoles has been identified in a Sicilian family. This patient shows all the characteristics of ichthyosis and neutral lipid storage disease (Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome). Family data confirm an autosomal recessive inheritance; the heterozygotes may be detected by the presence of vacuoles in circulating eosinophils.
