Introduction Twenty to thirty percent appendices removed from patients with suspected appendicitis appear normal on histology. The cause of pain in these patients is unknown. The presence of eosinophils and mast cells should be looked at skeptically which may explain the cause of pain. The aim was to study the eosinophils, mast cells, nerves and ganglions in normal and infl amed appendices.Materials and methods A total of 329 appendices including 192 case of acute appendicitis (group A), 94 cases of clinically acute but histologically normal appendices (group B), 13 cases of complementary/elective appendicectomies (group C) and 30 normal controls from medico-legal autopsies(group D), were studied for the presence of eosinophils, mast cells, nerves and ganglia in mucosa, submucosa and muscularis propria. Routine haematoxylin and eosin stained sections were used for eosinophils, nerves and ganglia and Toludine blue sections for mast cell counts. One way ANOVA and logistic regression was used for statistical analysis ResultsThe mean eosinophil and mast cell counts were signifi cantly higher in mucosa, submucosa and muscularis propria in Group A and B, when compared to group C+D. The number of nerves and ganglion cells were signifi cantly higher in group A when compared to groups B and C+D. The correlation between eosinophil and mast cell count was not found to be statistically signifi cant.Conclusion A signifi cant increase in Eosinophils, mast cells, nerves and ganglion cells was seen in acute appendicitis. Increase in eosinophils and mast cells may explain the pain in histologicaly normal but clinically suspected acute appendicitis.
Colitis cystic profunda is a rare entity benign condition of the colon and rectum that can mimic suspicious polyps or malignancy. The commonest sites of affectation are the rectum and the sigmoid colon but it can be unusually widely distributed in the colon. The aetiology of this condition is not fully elucidated and confident diagnosis can only be made on histological features. We hereby describe a patient who presented with significant rectal symptoms and an unexpected finding of a submucosal mucous cyst mimicking a suspicious rectal polyp and highlighted its significance and the review of the literature.
Adsorption of a cationic dye, like methylene blue (MB) onto coconut coir dust, is investigated. Coconut coir is a by‐product of coconut industries. Increasing concerns about environment, global warming have led the scientists to focus on the use of agricultural residue and plant waste fibers. Due to the presence of hydroxyl and polar groups in various constituents of cellulosic fibers, the moisture sorption is expected quite high. Objective of this study is to investigate the potential of coconut coir as bio sorbent for the removal of cationic dye (methylene blue). Adsorption is studied as a function of concentration of both adsorbate and adsorbent with pH and temperature.
