Biometric features and oil contents of macauba (Acrocomia aculeata) palms natively growing in sites representatives of the Brazilian Cerrados (Campo Grande-CG, and Sao Gabriel do Oeste-SGO), and Pantanal (Corumba-CO, and Aquidauana-AQ) biomes were studied. The objective was to obtain data that could assist better planning for the exploitation of natural populations, and knowledge to help selection and breeding programs. Plant (spines presence; stem circumference; number and length of bunches) and fruits characteristics (fruits per bunch; size; mass; proportion of components-husk, pulp, shell and kernel; fruits moisture at ripening; pulp and kernel oil content) were measured from ten native palms from each site. There was variability in biometrics, biomass production potential and oil yield in the palms within each site and among the sites. No correlation was found between biometrics features and oil contents. On average, plants from CG showed better general productive characteristics than any other of the studied sites, but a large variability in fruits size. Palms from CO presented smaller fruits, but they were more homogeneous in size and with higher kernel oil contents. Fruits from SGO show bigger mass and size, but it did not result in higher fruit biomass production or oil yield. Although oil yields potential were almost half of what is usually measured in other areas of Brazil, results provided interesting data for a better planning to rational exploitation of native macauba groves in these areas. Variability within plants from all sites indicate that they could be a reserve of genetic materials for further development of cropping systems aiming production of oil and other useful products.
Melipona marginata is an endangered species of stingless bee from Brazil that produces honey with particular physicochemical features and a remarkable exotic flavor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report devoted to exploring the medicinal potential of this honey. Thus, the aim of this paper was to investigate the potential anti-inflammatory activity of honey extract from M. marginata on skin inflammation. The honey sample was classified as a monofloral honey of Mimosa scabrella. The presence of 11 phenolic compounds as kaempferol and caffeic acid was detected using the high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-UV-ESI-MS) method. The anti-inflammatory activity was measured using a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-induced ear edema model of inflammation in mice. The topical application of the M. marginata honey extract (1.0 mg/ear) was able to reduce ear edema with an inhibitory effect of 54 ± 5%. This extract decreased the myeloperoxidase activity in 75 ± 3%, which suggests a lower leucocyte infiltration that was confirmed by histological analysis. This extract also provided a reduction of 55 ± 14% in the production of reactive oxygen species. This anti-inflammatory activity could be due to a synergic effect of the phenolic compounds identified in the honey sample. Taken together, these results open up new possibilities for the use of M. marginata honey extract in skin disorders.
A cv.
Processing of canned baby corn: assessment of cultivars aBSTRacTBaby corn, immature corn-cob yet fertilized, has become important for the canning in Brazil, because it is specially pleasant and low-calories. This research proposed to evaluate the quality of canned baby corn from four cultivars; determine the nutritional compositions of these cultivars; and determine the baby corn yield for canning. The acidification procedures used in processing resulted in a product safe for consumption. The tasters preferred the canned baby corn with highest acidity, which had an estimated pH 3.9 for stabilization, instead of 4.2 and canned with 4.0% brine. The canned of the cv. DKB 214, p 3021, aG 6018 and DKB 215 were considered equally palatable by the tasters. The nutritional compositions of the four cultivars were similar and these were low-calories because they had law-concentration in both the carbohydrate and the protein, and the lipid was insignificant (lower than 0.30%). Thus, considering the yield in baby corn for the canned, the cv. p 3021 was recommended, because it had a yield of 25.90% higher than the cv aG 6018, which had the lower.KEy-wORdS: Zea mays, baby corn canned, agroindustry, functional food, nutritional composition.
Palavras-chave: Alfa-bisabolol, camazuleno, CG-EM AbstractThe distillation process was periodically monitored, on Campo Largo-PR, in "CHAMEL Ind. e Com. de Produtos Naturais LTDA.", in the 2005 harvest. The hydrodistillation and GC-MS analyses were done in the UFPR Laboratories. The obtained data indicate that the chamomile essential oil extracted through the distiller model used presented low quality. Great part of the essential oil, besides their main components, it was being lost with the hidrolato. In the distillation process the periodic evaluation of quality and efficiency indicators is indispensable to establish appropriate operational conditions.
