179ChemInform Abstract The alkali metal salts (I), derived from formanilides, are coupled with 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (II) to generate the Meisenheimer complexes (III). These are converted to the target compounds (IV) upon heating in an aqueous solution. A one-pot modification of this method consists in treatment of the formanilides (V) with aqueous sodium hydroxide and subsequent refluxing in the presence of the furoxan (II). (Mechanism).

The formanilides (I) are deprotonated with sodium hydride (II) or potassium hydroxide to generate the sodium (III) or potassium salts which are heated with benzofuroxan (IV), producing the 2‐arylbenzotriazole 1‐oxides (V).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
