For many years Woods metal casts of the auditory apparatus and paranasal sinuses have served for study and teaching purposes. Preparation of these casts is expensive and time-consuming. A rapid and economical method of preparing these casts with dental acrylic is presented. The technic of injecting the middle and internal ear with low melting point metal (Woods) and freeing the metal cast from the bone by corrosion processes was described by Siebenmann (1882). Siebenmanii (1890, 1897) made extensive use of this technic in his classic studies on the pneumatization of the temporal bone. Casts prepared in this manner are valuable for teaching and research purposes. However, m700ds metal is affected by strongly alkaline and acid solutions, therefore decalcification must be done in weak solutions over a period of many weeks.Jones ( ' 3 5 ) , Guild ( ' 3 5 ) , Anson et al. ('38) and Bast and Anson ('49) have expressed doubt that all of the smaller air cells become filled when molten metal is poured into the bone and they have relied more extensively upon the wax plate reconstruction of stained serial sections. This method is accurate but very laborious.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
