Palliative care aims to reaffirm the importance of life, facing death as a natural process, with the family having an important role in this process. The present study aims to know what the national literature has presented, in the period from 2013 to 2019, on the theme of work overload and its dimensions in family care for elderly people in palliative care. This is a reflective study carried out with the support of ten articles and a dissertation selected from the descriptors "caregivers", "elderly" and "home care" in the online research bases Scientific Electronic Electronic Library Online, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, Nursing Database, International Literature in Health Sciences and Medline. Needs and difficulties are common among family members' experiences. Caregiver work overload is a multidimensional phenomenon that involves changes both in the individual's physical and emotional state. The routine of a caregiver requires conditions of emotional, psychological and physical preparation, which often does not happen in all families. Thinking about the reflection on the Palliative Care proposal, it is essential to consider the family as a care unit, the context of family caregivers, it is surrounded by changes and challenges, both in terms of the overload difficulties in caring for the elderly, whether in the absence of socioeconomic conditions.
Nurses increasingly assume leadership roles throughout the health care delivery chain and their responsibilities permeate the entire care process. The present study aims to know what the national and international literature has presented, in the period from 2015 to 2019, on the theme leadership in nursing in relation to palliative care. It is a reflective study. To support the reflection, a survey of the literature was carried out in the online databases Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Scientific Electronic Library Online. The descriptors used were as follows: "Palliative care", "leadership" and "nursing". The search was carried out in February 2020, and four articles were selected that helped in the discussion. Leading nurses with knowledge in palliative care are essential for the success of care initiatives. Furthermore, it is necessary to establish links between the professional and the patient in order to guarantee qualified, comprehensive and continuous care, encompassing family / caregiver in a humanized, resolutive way, with quality and responsibility. The importance of leadership and the use of communication were identified as strategies that allow nurses to implement changes in order to provide quality palliative care. Nursing leadership in the face of palliative care arises naturally, since the nurse receives information from all members of the multidisciplinary team, being a link between all professionals, as well as between the family and the team.
We aimed to outline the (in)dependence in performing basic activities of daily living of elderly people at home; apply educational geronto-technology to minimize specific functional loss; identify functional changes of these people, after using educational geronto-technology. This is a descriptive quantitative research, carried out in Rio Grande-RS, Brazil, with 109 elderly in three stages, from February 2011 to April 2012, using structured interview and the Katz Index. Data were grouped for statistical/descriptive treatment. First stage: female (69.7%), aged 60-69 years (43.0%), married (42.2%). Second stage: applying educational geronto-technology. Third stage: profile similarity of elderly people regarding the first stage. In performing basic activities of daily living, 21% of the elderly presented some dependence in the two data collections, highlighting the (urinary) continence function. Nurses need to understand the functional assessment of the elderly as a guiding tool for the planning and implementation of care.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
