This chapter uses the state of Western Australia as a case study to explore issues relating to the development of various tourism certification programmes in Australia from the perspective of a protected area manager. Possible reasons for the slow uptake of certification programmes in Western Australia and the implications for park agencies are discussed. The chapter also examines some of the developmental, historical and geopolitical issues that have contributed to both the successes and the shortcomings in the development of tourism certification programmes in Australian protected areas.
