Globally, between one quarter and one-third of total grains produced each year are lost during storage mainly through infestation of insect pests. Among the available control options such as chemical and physical techniques, fumigation with aluminum phosphide (AlP) is so far considered the best control strategy against storage insect pests. However, these insect pests are now developing resistance against AIP due to its indiscriminate use due to non-availability of any effective alternative control option. Resistance to AIP among storage insect pests is increasing, and its inhalation has shown adverse effects on animals and human beings. Nanotechnology has opened up a wide range of opportunities in various fields such as agriculture (pesticides, fertilizers, etc.), pharmaceuticals, and electronics. One of the applications of nanotechnology is the usage of nanomaterial-based insecticide formulations for mitigating field and storage insect pests. Several formulations, namely, nanoemulsions, nanosuspensions, controlled release formulations, and solid-based nanopesticides, have been developed with different modes of action and application. The major advantage is their small size which helps in proper spreading on the pest surface, and thus, better action than conventional pesticides is achieved. Besides their minute size, these have no or reduced harmful effects on non-target species. Nanopesticides can therefore provide green and efficient alternatives for the management of insect pests of field and storage. However, an outcry against the utilization of nano-based pesticides is also revealed. It is considered by some that nano-insecticides may also have hazardous effects on humans as well as on the environment. Due to limited available data, nanopesticides have become a double-edged weapon. Therefore, nanomaterials need to be evaluated extensively for their large-scale adoption. In this article, we reviewed the nanoformulations that are developed and have proved effective against the insect pests under postharvest storage of grains.
Genetic biofortification is recognized as a cost-effective and sustainable strategy to reduce micronutrient malnutrition. Genomic regions governing grain iron concentration (GFeC), grain zinc concentration (GZnC), and thousand kernel weight (TKW) were investigated in a set of 280 diverse bread wheat genotypes. The genome-wide association (GWAS) panel was genotyped using 35 K Axiom Array and phenotyped in five environments. The GWAS analysis showed a total of 17 Bonferroni-corrected marker-trait associations (MTAs) in nine chromosomes representing all the three wheat subgenomes. The TKW showed the highest MTAs (7), followed by GZnC (5) and GFeC (5). Furthermore, 14 MTAs were identified with more than 10% phenotypic variation. One stable MTA i.e. AX-95025823 was identified for TKW in both E4 and E5 environments along with pooled data, which is located at 68.9 Mb on 6A chromosome. In silico analysis revealed that the SNPs were located on important putative candidate genes such as Multi antimicrobial extrusion protein, F-box domain, Late embryogenesis abundant protein, LEA-18, Leucine-rich repeat domain superfamily, and C3H4 type zinc finger protein, involved in iron translocation, iron and zinc homeostasis, and grain size modifications. The identified novel MTAs will be validated to estimate their effects in different genetic backgrounds for subsequent use in marker-assisted selection. The identified SNPs will be valuable in the rapid development of biofortified wheat varieties to ameliorate the malnutrition problems.
Genomic regions governing days to heading (DH), grain filling duration (GFD), grain number per spike (GNPS), grain weight per spike (GWPS), plant height (PH), and grain yield (GY) were investigated in a set of 280 diverse bread wheat genotypes. The genome-wide association studies (GWAS) panel was genotyped using a 35K Axiom Array and phenotyped in five environments. The GWAS analysis showed a total of 27 Bonferroni-corrected marker-trait associations (MTAs) on 15 chromosomes representing all three wheat subgenomes. The GFD showed the highest MTAs (8), followed by GWPS (7), GY (4), GNPS (3), PH (3), and DH (2). Furthermore, 20 MTAs were identified with more than 10% phenotypic variation. A total of five stable MTAs (AX-95024590, AX-94425015, AX-95210025 AX-94539354, and AX-94978133) were identified in more than one environment and associated with the expression of DH, GFD, GNPS, and GY. Similarly, two novel pleiotropic genomic regions with associated MTAs i.e. AX-94978133 (4D) and AX-94539354 (6A) harboring co-localized QTLs governing two or more traits were also identified. In silico analysis revealed that the SNPs were located on important putative candidate genes such as F-box-like domain superfamily, Lateral organ boundaries, LOB, Thioredoxin-like superfamily Glutathione S-transferase, RNA-binding domain superfamily, UDP-glycosyltransferase family, Serine/threonine-protein kinase, Expansin, Patatin, Exocyst complex component Exo70, DUF1618 domain, Protein kinase domain involved in the regulation of grain size, grain number, growth and development, grain filling duration, and abiotic stress tolerance. The identified novel MTAs will be validated to estimate their effects in different genetic backgrounds for subsequent use in marker-assisted selection (MAS).
Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) having adverse effects on both crop yields and quality, is one of the major constraints of wheat production in areas with high rainfall. In the north-eastern parts of India and also many areas of the world receiving rainfall during the late maturity stages of the crop affects both grain yields and quality. PHS trait is polygenic trait and affected by number of environmental factors. The available diversity in germplasm for the trait is very limited and for improving tolerance to PHS newer sources needs to be identified. The primary cause of pre-harvest sprouting is the breakdown or lacking of seed dormancy under humid and wet conditions along with the degradation of starch in the germinated seeds due to enhanced alpha amylase activity. This review describes the factors affecting the pre-harvest sprouting tolerance, genes associated with it, physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanism involved, screening technique and breeding approaches to develop PHS s tolerant wheat genotypes.
Farmers in northwestern and central India have been exploring to sow their wheat much earlier (October) than normal (November) to sustain productivity by escaping terminal heat stress and to utilize the available soil moisture after the harvesting of rice crop. However, current popular varieties are poorly adapted to early sowing due to the exposure of juvenile plants to the warmer temperatures in the month of October and early November. Therefore, a study was undertaken to identify wheat genotypes suited to October sowing under warmer temperatures in India. A diverse collection of 3322 bread wheat varieties and elite lines was prepared in CIMMYT, Mexico, and planted in the 3rd week of October during the crop season 2012–2013 in six locations (Ludhiana, Karnal, New Delhi, Indore, Pune and Dharwad) spread over northwestern plains zone (NWPZ) and central and Peninsular zone (CZ and PZ; designated as CPZ) of India. Agronomic traits data from the seedling stage to maturity were recorded. Results indicated substantial diversity for yield and yield-associated traits, with some lines showing indications of higher yields under October sowing. Based on agronomic performance and disease resistance, the top 48 lines (and two local checks) were identified and planted in the next crop season (2013–2014) in a replicated trial in all six locations under October sowing (third week). High yielding lines that could tolerate higher temperature in October sowing were identified for both zones; however, performance for grain yield was more promising in the NWPZ. Hence, a new trial of 30 lines was planted only in NWPZ under October sowing. Lines showing significantly superior yield over the best check and the most popular cultivars in the zone were identified. The study suggested that agronomically superior wheat varieties with early heat tolerance can be obtained that can provide yield up to 8 t/ha by planting in the third to fourth week of October.
