Sleep apnea episodes represent a problem both for the patients and for the patients bed partners. The objective of this study was to record the comparative effects of two types of polymeric appliances in the therapy of some mild apnea symptoms (bruxism and snoring). The effect of therapy with the used appliances was pursued on 42 patients, divided in two groups. In the first group of 21 patients, we used a custom made appliance achieved by Erkoflex disks, and in the second group of 21 patients, the preformed SomnoFit-Oscimed polymeric appliance. The survey lasted for a 12 month period, 1 month before the insertion in mouth of the appliances and 11 months therapy with polymeric appliances. The authors questionnaire was completed daily by the patients and their bed partners, which noted the night comfort with inserted appliances in the mouth, the existence/absence of morning pain in the area of the masseter muscle, existence/absence of the morning fatigue, respectively the maintaining, diminishing and the absence of snoring and of nocturnal bruxism. The results of the study were favorable and proved that the nocturnal therapy of bruxism and of snoring, by using these two polymeric appliances were efficient. SomnoFit appliance performed better in reducing bruxism and snoring, but custom made Erkoflex appliances presented a greater resistance in time.
The development of new classes of dental materials determined the apparition of reinforced polymers, as BioHPP and Trinia, used for core in non-metallic prosthetic restorations, including in implants non-metallic superstructure. The purpose of the study was to present the results of the comparative clinical trials referring to the use of BioHPP and Trinia resins as core in fixed prosthetic rehabilitation. The researches were performed on 33 patients in which we realized 71 fixed prosthetic restorations. According to the six evaluation criteria used in research, we conducted biannual monitoring meetings over two and half years period for registrations of comparative results in the use of these two reinforced polymers as core. The results of the study demonstrated that both type of these materials exhibit a certain degree of elasticity and presents many advantages, therefore these represent a beneficial acquisition in patients oral health.
The intraosseous implants are the most used dental implants. The development of new classes of dental biomaterials determined the apparition of Trinia, a Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) reinforced polymer, used for core in non-metallic prosthetic restorations, including implants superstructure. The aim of the study was to present the obtained results in the use of Trinia polymer as non-metallic core on the abutments of Bicon implants. 35 patients were selected, 19 females and 16 males, aged between 31 and 60 years. After 18 months of results monitoring, we ascertained that Trinia reinforced polymer had a very good behavior in the oral cavity, and the patients did not complain about inconveniences due to the oral rehabilitation with this biopolymer.
The aim of this study was to evaluate pain intensity and wound healing of the post-extraction sites after the use of Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF). 240 patients which needed difficult or multiple extractions were included in the study. The extractions were realized under local anesthesia, with piezotome and pliers. The patients were divided in two groups, the first group of 120 patients which benefited the application of PRF in the post-extraction alveoli, and the second group of 120 patients represented the control group (without application of PRF). A questionnaire was realized after a VAS analog scale and was used to quantify the post-intervention pain intensity in the postoperative four days. The assessment of the post-extraction sites healing period was performed clinically. According to the obtained results, the healing period of the post-extraction sites was shorter in the patients of first group (PRF), compared to the sites of control group patients. No postextractional healing complications occurred in the patients of first group/PRF. The study demonstrated the benefits of PRF insertion in post-intervention healing.
Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a serious complication of bisphosphonate therapy administered to treat conditions such as osteoporosis, Paget’s disease or bone metastases. In this article we present the case of a patient with complex pathology, suffering breast cancer surgery, who performed IV treatment with Zometa for 1 year postoperative. The patient developed ONJ in the mandibular frontal region and has experienced numerous episodes of acute infectious. In the first months of the onset disease were applied non-invasive topical treatments without success, followed by multiple surgeries to remove the pathological tissue by conventional methods. Many relapses led us to the successful adoption of a complex protocol, which combines several modern techniques and technology: piezosurgically bone resection guided by fluorescent light, the use of laser on soft tissue and application of PRF membranes in the residual defect.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
