The Vi vaccine was effective in young children and protected unvaccinated neighbors of Vi vaccinees. The potential for combined direct and indirect protection by Vi vaccine should be considered in future deliberations about introducing this vaccine in areas where typhoid fever is endemic. Eleven specimens collected from Manipur were also genotyped and revealed a very high degree of genomic reassortment.Group A rotaviruses are the major cause of severe dehydrating gastroenteritis among human infants and young of a wide variety of mammalian and avian species (17), and it has been estimated that nearly a million deaths occur every year (9, 20), predominantly in developing countries.Fifteen G serotypes of rotaviruses (27) are recognized, depend on the molecular characterization of VP7 (glycosylated outer capsid protein). However, G1 to G4 are the most predominant genotypes in humans. Moreover, a number of unusual genotypes, G5, G8, and G9, have also been reported recently from various countries (8). Thirteen P serotypes (22) and 21 P genotypes are recognized on the basis of VP4 (protease-sensitive outer capsid protein), but the most common P serotypes infecting humans are P1A and P1B, corresponding to the P[8] and P[4] genotypes, respectively. Although the role of VP4 protein in protective immunity is not very well established, information on G and P typing is important for identifying unusual or new virus strains circulating in different populations (19).The first human rotavirus vaccine (a human-animal tetravalent vaccine) was licensed in the United States in 1998; however, the same vaccine has not been tried extensively in other countries. Due to strain diversity in different parts of the world, knowledge of molecular epidemiology and antigenic diversity of rotaviruses in circulation is imperative for the development of a suitable, efficacious vaccine to combat rotaviral diarrhea. Therefore, in this study we report the characterization of different G and P types of rotavirus strains circulating in a particular area of India.
We identified 281 Vibrio cholerae non-O1, non-O139 strains from patients with diarrhea in Kolkata, India. Cholera-like diarrhea was the major symptom (66.0%); some patients (20.3%) had severe dehydration. These strains lacked the ctxA gene but many had hlyA, rtxA, and rtxC genes. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis showed no genetic link among strains.
This study presents results of a surveillance on cholera conducted with hospitalized patients admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Calcutta, India, from January 1993 to December 1995. The O139 serogroup of Vibrio cholerae dominated in 1993 but was replaced by O1 as the dominant serogroup in 1994 and 1995. The isolation rate of V. cholerae non-O1 non-O139 did not exceed 4.9% throughout the study period, while the isolation rate of the O139 serogroup in 1994 and 1995 was below 9%. No temporal clustering of any non-O1 non-O139 serogroup was observed. With the exception of 1 strain, none of the 64 strains belonging to the non-O1 non-O139 serogroup hybridized with ctx, zot, and ace gene probes, while 97.3 and 97.7% of the O139 and O1 strains, respectively, hybridized with all the three probes. Multiplex PCR studies revealed that all the O1 strains belonged to the ElTor biotype. There was a progressive increase in the cytotoxic response on CHO and HeLa cells evoked by culture supernatants of strains of V. cholerae non-O1 non-O139 isolated during 1994 and 1995 compared with the response evoked by those isolated in 1993. Dramatic shifts in patterns of resistance to antibiotics between strains of V. cholerae belonging to different serogroups and within strains of a serogroup isolated during different time periods were observed. There was a discernible increase in the incidence of multidrug-resistant strains of V. cholerae O1 isolated in 1994 and 1995 compared with that in 1993. On the basis of the results of this study, we predict the possibility of newer variants of V. cholerae emerging in the future.
We identified 131 strains of Vibrio fluvialis among 400 nonagglutinating Vibrio spp. isolated from patients with diarrhea in Kolkata, India. For 43 patients, V. fluvialis was the sole pathogen identified. Most strains harbored genes encoding hemolysin and metalloprotease; this finding may contribute to understanding of the pathogenicity of V. fluvialis.
