Th is paper presents the challenges of introducing gender-inclusive language in Slovene in last two decades. Within this scope we focus on the progressive developments in the sphere of adopting gender-inclusive language and present the entire background as well as the counter-forces (and their line of argumentation), working to eradicate the eff orts for employing gender-inclusive language in the Slovenian society. We thus present the main tendencies as well as linguistic elements aiming to facilitate gender-inclusive language in the Slovenian society, focusing mainly on the use of the underscore within our analysis. We analyze two manually constructed corpora with texts harvested from Slovenian websites of the organizations that use the underscore in order to employ genderinclusive language. We show that the use of the underscore is continually growing, in spite of the eff orts to downplay its value by challenging its usability and ubiquity.

This paper deals with a corpus-linguistic analysis of different text/media types in Slovene with the aim of finding out whether or not any of the communication channels covered by the corpora employed in our analysis serve as a means of unification against the concept of gender, thereby serving as a catalyst for creating and maintaining (new) speech communities. We aim to determine this by extracting the two most commonly misused concepts (terms) in Slovene, i.e. gender theory and gender ideology, and analysing their use in three different corpora of contemporary Slovene: the reference corpus Gigafida 2.0, the corpus of user-generated communication JANES, and the ELEXIS Slovenian Web 2020 corpus. Thus, we confirm that the media for user-generated communication, Twitter in particular, serve as a medium on which speech communities are being built, with their members sharing common views, activities, and beliefs. Hence, Twitter is used as a medium for maintaining and reproducing mutual ideology.

V sklopu konference Slovenščina na spletu in v novih medijih je 27. novembra Povod za okroglo mizo so bile terminološke zadrege, zaznane pri poskusu poimenovanja jezika v korpusu Janes, 1 vendar so slednje zelo hitro razkrile širok spekter kompleksnih vzrokov. Vprašanje opredelitve »slovenščine Janes« se tako zastavlja kot rezultat sprememb v načinu človeške komunikacije, po katerih opredelitve in pojmi obstoječe slovenske (in ne le slovenske) zvrstnostne teorije izgubljajo uporabno vrednost. Je mogoče po pojavu spleta in razvoju različnih zvrsti računalniško posredovane komunikacije še govoriti o 1 Gre za korpus računalniško posredovane komunikacije, ki zajema besedila tvitov, blogov, uporabniških komentarjev in forumov. Še danes-po skoraj 60 letih-se je mogoče strinjati z Jakobom Šolarjem (1957b: 83-84), ki je o stavi vejice kot enega izmed ločil razmišljal takole: V slovenščini smo prevzeli sistem ločil po nemškem, kar je dosti razumljivo pri našem življenju v kulturni in šolski skupnosti z Nemci skozi dolga stoletja. Ta sistem je po svoje dober, vendar premehanično in dosledno izveden lahko vodi v nasprotje z našim živim govorom. Če je res, da so ločila pravorečna znamenja, bi morali upoštevati tudi živi govor, ne le golo črko. Vejica je ločilo, »o stavi katerega so si bili kritiki [pravopisnih pravil] najbolj in najpogosteje navzkriž« (Dobrovoljc 2004: 188). To se vse do danes ni spremenilo, različnim mnenjem o vejičnih pravilih pa se v zadnjem času kot posledica skoraj 15-letnega obdobja od izida zadnjega pravopisa (SP 2001) pridružujejo še pozivi po njihovi posodobitvi (npr. Dobrovoljc-Jakop 2011: 102-103; Lengar Verovnik 2012: 166). Celovitejšim razmišljanjem o slovenski vejici je mogoče slediti predvsem v (a) že omenjenih pravopisnih pravilih 1 in odzivih nanje, (b) posebej na vejico 1 Vključno z Načrtom pravil za novi slovenski pravopis (1981). V prispevku prikazujemo rezultate ankete o vejici, s katero smo ugotavljali, katera vejična mesta so za dijake štiriletnih (v glavnem gimnazijskih) programov in študente različnih študijskih področij najbolj zahtevna. V razpravnem delu prispevka nato rezultate povezujemo s srednješolskim učnim procesom, kot ga za to temo določa učni načrt, ter pravopisnimi pravili, ki bi jih bilo smiselno (in treba) prenoviti. The survey was used to determine the most problematic places for comma placement among students at four-year (upper) secondary schools in Slovenia and university students in various fields. The final part of the article establishes a relation between the secondary-school curriculum and orthographic rules, which are in need of an update.
