Abstract-As defending Islam actions in 2016 were the greatest historical moment in Jakarta with a significant impact on Muslims in Indonesia, one of Islamic organizations, HizbutTahrir Indonesia (HTI), recorded these actions through Instagram in Indonesian which can be read as well in English through the newest InstagramMachine Translation (IMT) of 10.3.2 version. These translated captions produced by IMT are interested to be studied because no research has discussed about it yet. Therefore, this study was conducted with two purposes, firstly, to find out semantic errors of referential, grammatical, and contextual meaning of translated captions. Another purpose was to determine whether or not people have advantages to use IMT for understanding the captions in English. The data were HTI's translated captions relating with three defending Islam actions in the late 2016 that were analyzed qualitatively through comparing both captions between the source language and target language in order to describe errors based on semantic aspects theory. The research result showed successively that three kinds of semantic errors, namely grammatical, contextual, and referential meaning were significantly there. All these errors proved that IMT cannot translate the captions accurately from Indonesian into English. In conclusion, IMT is not able to translate successfully and this implies that human translation is more reliable than IMT. Therefore, it is suggested that Instagram creator should evaluate and improve the quality of inn-app text translation feature, for example by applying the service of correctionbutton.
Since the popularity of YouTube as one of the sources to learn language especially English in digital era, students in tertiary education nowadays tend to appreciate a poem through this platform. The research about appreciating the cultural values of English poem is still far on the ground. Therefore, this study focuses to find out the students perception of cultural values in “Travel” as a classical poem by Robert Stevenson. The qualitative method of interview and online survey is conducted to obtain the students’ views of cultural values proposed by Schwart. The result revealed that they stated stimulation, self-direction, conformity and tradition as the cultures values expressed in that poem. However students selected youTube as the most preference way in appreciating the poem due to its attractive visual and vast imagination.
MALL in translation is increasingly prevalent among Indonesian EFL students due to ICT development and practical usage in teaching and learning. In addressing this issue, this research assessed the students' success and understanding by using MALL to translate a coronavirus text. There are four issues to consider: 1) Is MALL helpful in improving students' translation abilities? 2) How do students see MALL translate a text from English to Indonesian? 3) How does MALL help them cope with language competency when translating a text from English to Indonesian? 4) What challenges do students have while translating a text from English to Indonesian using MALL? This research was performed using qualitative and quantitative methods (Mix Methods). The research possessed 85 undergraduate students from East Jakarta and South Sulawesi as the respondents. Data was amassed through an online survey, a semi-structured interview, and document analysis. After attending the MALL online learning session, a paired-sample t-test indicated a significantly different score across the students. According to the survey, interview, and document analysis findings, they had a positive attitude about MALL for translation. They had acquired powerful support in terms of word order, word choice, and sentence structure. Nonetheless, most of them agreed that the technical issue and the lack of assistance were the most significant obstacles to successfully operating the MALL for translation.
As the usage of ICT in teaching and learning, digital literacy becomes well-liked for Indonesian English department and non-English department students from Jakarta and Central Java. This research is to investigate both the students’ listening comprehension and their insight into educational videos for improving their listening skills. The objectives are: 1) finding out the students listening comprehension through watching VOA Learning English, 2) obtaining the students' perception of listening to English?, 3) exploring students' preferences to listen through video?, 4) investigating the listening media and topic the students like to listen to?, 5) probing the students' familiarity with VOA Learning English? This research was a comparative study including descriptive statistics. The questionnaire results revealed that the students from the two campuses shared similarities and differences in their preferences to increase their listening skills through video. The students of the English department and non-English department listening comprehension were categorized as fair since most of them reached scores between seventy and eighty. The majority of both English department and non-English department students like to listening English. However, they prefer watching a video in the form of a combination between monolog and dialog. They were enjoy the song for improving their listening skill. They also commit that the VOA video was interesting since it was designed to help them in developing their English skills daily. Likewise, such videos performed native speakers as role models which are favored by English department and non-English department students. Besides, they like to receive the questions after the video ends.
This research was to know the students’ reasons for choosing English study programs in higher education. This research was qualitative. There were 62 participants from the English Education study program in various colleges or universities in Indonesia, 32 students were from Public Higher Education, and the rest of the students were from Private Higher Education. The result showed two internal and external factors underlying the students' choosing English study programs. The internal factors were: 1) learning English is full of challenges, 2) English is the international language in the world, 3) it is an opportunity to get a scholarship abroad, 4) they are interested in learning, even deepening, oral and written English skills, 5) they have the desire to be an English teacher after graduation, 6) career prospects for English graduates are widely open, 7) English is the students’ favorite subject at senior high school, 8) English scores are good on their school report card, and 9) English scores are good and satisfactory in the national exam. Several external factors include: 1) the desire to choose the English major appears from themselves (they are not influenced by their parents/family, friends, and school recommendation or request), 2) the prestigious image of being an English major student in the society, 3) no other major at college that attracts their attention, 4) good accreditation, 5) the good reputation of the study program, 6) the superiority among others, 7) the availability of tuition fee information, and 8) the desire to study at their favorite universities.
