Translating is not as simple as changing a text form one language into another. It is more complicated, since it involves many aspects including linguistics and culture. Yet, translation is a helpfull aid when it comes to the International area. In literature, for example, a literary text owes a help from translation to be world wide acknowledged. This makes the duty of a translator becomes heavier, due to the burden of translating literary text that should be faithfull. This article gives example of the unfaithfull translation of a literary text from Indonesian into English, focusing on the translation of the politeness strategies found. The analysis showed that there are several politness strategies deleted or not translated, which made the translated text unfaithfull. While the translation strategies used resulted on different level of accuracy and acceptability.

This article would like to present how women were defined in the movie, both by male and female characters. Mills (1998) provides a tool to help the readers understanding the style of a writer through her choices of words, sentences, and even in the discourse level. A novel based movie which won and was nominated in several awards, The Breadwinner, was full of portrayal of women in the setting of Afghanistan under the Taliban rule. The tragic story was beautifully wrapped under the animated movie produced to show the real picture towards the world. The data are in the form of words, sentences and discourse spoken by male and female characters that represent the depiction of women. The data obtained are examined with the view of Sara Mills theory. It is found that in the movie, the women are represented as two opposing aspects: women representation as an object of man domination,and women as the subject who is able to speak out her mind and to decide independently.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2018.020105

Translating swearing words has become an interesting study to conduct, especially because it involves two different languages that carry different social values. One language might be rich of such words that are considered as taboos, in this case swearing words, others might restrict the use of swearing words. This might create a problem when the swearing words are used as parts of the characterization of a character in a story. As one of the traits, swearing words should be translated as close as possible in order not to distort the character’s quality. This is the task of the translator not to misconstruct the characters in the text s/he translates. This study explores character shift such character distortion due to the translation of swearing words in subtitle translation of a movie, “Suicide Squad” in Indonesian context.

A dialogue carries feelings and thoughts of a character in a story. It might also convey emotional expressions. In the translating process, emotional expression, one of many factors which needs to be considered, is regarded as expressive meaning. Thus, in translating dialogues, it is necessary to preserve the emotional expression of the source language. As translation process involves two different languages, there could be changes occurred from ST to TT. Therefore, this study aims to use translation shift to seek the changes in dialogue translation in some short stories in Karyamin’s Smile. This research is a qualitative-descriptive analysis as it proposes to identify the types of shift used in dialogue translation and analyze the equivalence to the ST. The dialogues that have been categorized were examined the equivalence using a translation assessment rubric proposed by Khanmohammad and Osanloo (2009). The result shows that each type of shift used more or less affects the equivalence of dialogue translation. The types of shift that are mostly appeared are structure shift and unit shift. Those types produce some patterns. The patterns found in structure shift are passive to active forms, affirmative to interrogative sentence, affirmative to imperative sentence. In unit shift, the patterns found are word to phrase, phrase to sentence, and word to sentence. In sum, structure shift can create more significant changes compared to unit shift as the patterns found mostly result in the changing intention of dialogues.
