Paradigma siswa-siswa saat ini yaitu cenderung beranggapan bahwa Sains adalah suatu ilmu pengetahuan yang sulit, abstrak dan tidak menarik. Sehingga berpengaruh terhadap minat siswa dalam mengikuti Olimpiade Sains Nasional (OSN). Selain itu siswa sudah terbiasa dengan permasalahan - permasalahan sains yang sederhana dan mudah saja, sehingga siswa tidak mampu menemukan solusi persoalan Sains yang rumit, khususnya soal - soal olimpiade. Hal ini menjadi perhatian khusus oleh Tim pengabdian Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji, sehingga dirasa perlu diadakannya pembinaan penyelesaian soal- soal olimpiade, sehingga siswa akan terbiasa dengan soal-soal bidang Sains, khususnya soal-soal bidang kimia level olimpiade. Kegiatan pengabdian yang dilakukan ini menggunakan metode kegiatan pendampingan dan pembinaan. Adapun peserta yang mengikuti pembinaan ini adalah siswa/i SMP Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang yang berjumlah 10 orang. Pembinaan dilakukan selama satu bulan (November 2019) dengan jadwal 2 (dua) kali seminggu yaitu pada hari Senin dan Sabtu. Berdasarkan hasil kegiatan pengabdian yang telah dilakukan dapat disimpulkan berdasarkan hasil tes kemampuan siswa bahwa kegiatan pembinaan penyelesaian soal-soal olimpiade Sains bidang Kimia pada topik materiapat dikatakan berhasil. Hal ini dikarenakan 70% siswa yang mengikuti kegiatan pelatihan mendapatkan skor diatas 70.
Bacteria are the most dominant group of microorganisms in aquatic environments due to their role in organic matter decomposition. Decomposition activity is related to the type and dominance of bacteria in the communities. Therefore, study of bacterial diversity is an important step to understand their role in aquatic ecosystems. This study was to determine bacterial diversity and their physiological characters of bacteria from Bandealit Coast in Jember East Java Indonesia. The bacteria were confirmed by BOX-PCR profile for their genetic polymorphisms. Identification of potential isolate was conducted based on 16S rRNA gene sequence. The result showed that BA011109 isolate was able to utilize D-cellobiose as a sole substrate, indicating its ability to hydrolyse β β β β βglucoside bond. This isolate was a potential decomposer in the area considering that most of organic pollutants were from plants that cointain high cellulose. Based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence, this isolate was closely related to Microbacterium esteraromaticum with 100% homology. Further study on quantitative hydrolytic activities is needed to elucidate its role as an organic matter decomposer in aquatic environment.
Rice that is generally consumed by Indonesian people is that does not have important nutrient such as β-carotene. Therefore, the way to supply β-carotene requirement in staple foods can be done through β-carotene biofortification by genetic engineering of the rice plant. PAC Nagdong/ IR36 is transgenic Golden Rice which can produce β-carotene. The research aimed to determine some nutritional content of PAC Nagdong/ IR36 rice lines that include carbohydrate, amylose, amylopectin, protein, lipid, and β-carotene content. Amylose was measured using the iodine colorimetric method, whereas the contents of amylopectin and carbohydrates were measured using the by difference method. Protein was measured using the Bradford method, lipid was measured using Proctor and Bowen method, while β-carotene content was measured using the colorimetric method. PAC Nagdong/ IR36 rice lines had carbohydrate content between 85,06-90,16%, amylose 12,94%- 20,81%, amylopectin 69,35- 76,17%, protein 7,76-8,52 µg/µl, lipid 0,65-0,90%, and β-carotene 231,61-920,52 µg/g. Carbohydrate, protein, and β-carotene in PAC Nagdong/ IR36 were higher than TN1 rice variety (control). This indicated that PAC Nagdong/ IR36 provided better nutrition. Amylose content of Nagdong/ IR36 PAC rice was low, which donated its potential to produce fluffier rice whereas high β-carotene content could be used as a source of β-carotene that is useful in overcoming vitamin A deficiency and beneficial for health including in preventing degenerative diseases.
Olimpiade sains nasional (OSN) adalah suatu sarana untuk mengukur ketercapaian pembelajaran pada suatu mata pelajaran. Matematika merupakan salah satu bidang yang diujikan pada OSN. Banyak siswa menganggap matematika sebagai pelajaran yang sulit. SMPN 4 Tanjungpinang merupakan salah satu Sekolah Menengah Pertama di Tanjungpinang yang rutin mengirimkan utusan untuk mengikuti OSN tetapi masih kurang efektif dalam melakukan kegiatan pembinaan OSN. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan kegiatan berupa pembinaan terhadap Siswa yang akan mengikuti OSN bidang matematika. Kegiatan ini diselenggarakan di SMPN 4 Tanjungpinang dan diikuti oleh 10 Siswa yang berasal dari kelas VII dan kelas VIII. Kegiatan pembinaan dilaksanakan dalam dua pertemuan dengan menekankan pada penguatan konsep dan pelatihan penyelesaian soal-soal. Topik yang dibahas adalah statistika dan peluang. Tes berupa soal esai diberikan kepada peserta pembinaan untuk mengukur kemampuan siswa dalam memecahan masalah yang disajikan dalam soal olimpiade. Hasil tes menunjukkan bahwa siswa belum mampu untuk memecahkan masalah secara baik. Hal ini mengindikasikan pentingnya pembinaan yang lebih baik untuk memberikan penguatan konsep dan mengembangkan kemampuan siswa dalam memecahkan masalah olimpiade.
