The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) regarding concepts of "surface area and volume of vertical circular cylinder" on seventh grade students' achievement and attitudes toward mathematics. A pre-test and post-test control group with quasi-experimental study design was used. This research was carried out with 49 seventh grade Turkish students (24 students in the experimental group, and 25 students in the control group). The students in the experimental group were taught with CAI, while the students in the control group were taught in the traditional way (textbookbased direct instruction). The "Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT)" and the "Mathematics Attitude Scale (MAS)" were administered to both groups as a pretest and a post-test. The data were analyzed with multivariate analysis of variance (MANCOVA). The results indicated that CAI significantly improved students' mathematics achievement compared to the results achieved through traditional instruction. However, it was found that short-term CAI implementation did not make a significant difference on students' attitudes toward mathematics.
The aim of this case study is to define reflection activities of a lesson study group that consisted of three middle school mathematics teachers in Usak, Turkey. In the process, the participants worked in collaboration for about 5 months to implement three study lesson practices. The data were collected through observations in the reflection processes of the study lessons. Teachers' reflection activities were analyzed based on the literature of teacher self-regulation. As a result, lesson study encouraged teachers to make detailed and reliable evaluations, controllable causal attributions, and productive inferences for their teaching.
Background: One of the most serious health issues in developing regions is tuberculosis (TB), which has high prevalence worldwide. We aimed to investigate 6 cases of primary hepatic tuberculosis that mimics malignancy and to emphasize that differential diagnosis should be considered in Turkey, which is still an endemic region for tuberculosis. Methods: Data of 14 patients who were diagnosed with primary hepatic tuberculosis between January 2008 and January 2018 were retrospectively evaluated. Results: There were 11 females and 3 males among the cases with an average age of 51.3 years old. The most frequent presentations were the upper right quadrant pain and weight loss. Although laboratory values of 12 patients were normal, isolated gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) height was found in 2 patients. Granulomatous inflammation was diagnosed with applying percutaneous needle biopsy in 12 patients and laparoscopic liver biopsy in 2 patients. Tissue culture was positive in 2 patients. No recurrence was detected in any of the patients after medical treatment. Conclusions: When abdominal pain, fever, weight loss complaints, and malignancy-like masses in liver are detected during the differential diagnosis of patients who live in endemic areas such as Turkey; hepatic tuberculosis should be considered as a diagnosis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
