The objective of this study is to compare the tribological characteristic at macro-and nano-scale between the hydrogels based on hydroxylethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in articular cartilage. This study shows that the mechanical and tribological properties are similar at the nano-and macro-scale, irrespective of whether the surface roughness is small (a few tens of nm -peak-to-peak roughness atomic force microscope). HEMA hydrogel with 5% acrylic acid (AA) has the mechanical and tribological properties similar to articular cartilage. Therefore, the HEMA 5% AA hydrogel could be used as cartilage replacement in the treatment of joint diseases.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
