The solid-state structure of the amino acid phenylalanine (Phe) offers a potential key to understanding the behavior of a large class of important aromatic compounds. Obtaining good single crystals is, however, notoriously difficult. The structure of the common polymorph of Phe, form I, was first reported by Weissbuch et al. (as D-Phe) in 1990, but the correctness of the published C2 unit cell with two disordered molecules in the asymmetric unit was later questioned and other space groups suggested. The identity of form I of L-Phe is here established to be P21 with Z'=4, based on data from a well-diffracting single crystal grown from an acetic acid solution of the amino acid. A second new polymorph, form IV, together with the two recently described forms II and III provide unprecedented information on the structural complexity of this essential amino acid. It is furthermore documented that the racemate, dl-Phe, does not grow proper single crystals.

The polymer architecture of telechelic or associative polymers has a large impact on the bridging of self-assembled structures. This work presents the phase behavior, small angle neutron scattering (SANS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) of a nonionic oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsion with hydrophobically end-capped multiarm polymers with functionalities f = 2, 3, and 4. For high polymer concentrations and large average interdroplet distance relative to the end-to-end distance of the polymer, d/R ee, the system phase separates into a dense, highly connected droplet network phase, in equilibrium with a dilute phase. The extent of the two-phase region is larger for polymers with similar length but higher f. The interaction potential between the droplets in the presence of polymer has both a repulsive and an attractive contribution as a result of the counterbalancing effects of the exclusion by polymer chains and bridging between droplets. This study experimentally demonstrates that higher polymer functionalities induce a stronger attractive force between droplets, which is responsible for a more extended phase separation region, and correlate with lower collective droplet diffusivities and higher amplitude of the second relaxation time in DLS. The viscosity and the droplet self-diffusion obtained from FCS, however, are dominated by the end-capped chain concentration.

The reactivity of Au(OAc F ) 2 (tpy) (1, OAc F = OCOCF 3 ; tpy = 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine) toward a wide variety of different alkenes with various substitution patterns and different oxygen-based nucleophiles has been investigated. These reactions are two-step processes where a ligand substitution is followed by a nucleophilic addition furnishing Au(III) complexes with C(sp 3 ) ligands. In this work we have found that the reactions always occur trans to tpy-N while the OAc F ligand remains in place trans to tpy-C. The nucleophilic addition takes place exclusively at the most substituted side of the double bond, in a Markovnikov manner, and the nucleophilic addition occurs in an anti fashion as can be seen from the reaction with the 2,3-disubstituted alkene trans-2-hexene. This study has provided valuable insight into the scope and regiochemistry of Au(III) mediated nucleophilic additions, which is of great importance for further development of Au(III) catalysis and alkene functionalization.

Die Festkçrperstruktur der Aminosäure Phenylalanin (Phe) bietet einen mçglichen Schlüssel, um das Verhalten einer großen Klasse von wichtigen aromatischen Verbindungen zu verstehen. Gute Einkristalle zu erhalten ist bekanntermaßen dennoch schwierig. Die Struktur des üblichen Polymorphs von Phe, Form I, wurde zuerst von Weiss et al. (als d-Phe) im Jahr 1990 beschrieben. Die Richtigkeit der verçffentlichten C2-Elementarzelle mit zwei fehlgeordneten Molekülen in der asymmetrischen Einheit wurde jedoch später hinterfragt. Hier wird gezeigt, dass die Identität der Form I von l-Phe P21 mit Z' = 4 ist, basierend auf Daten aus einem gut beugenden Einkristall, der aus einer essigsauren Lçsung der Aminosäure gezüchtet wurde. Ein zweiter neuer Polymorph, Form IV, bietet zusammen mit den beiden kürzlich beschriebenen Formen II und III präzedenzlose Informationen über die strukturelle Komplexität dieser essenziellen Aminosäure. Phenylalanin, Phe, ist eine Biosynthesevorstufe von Tyrosin, Signalmolekülen wie Dopamin, Noradrenalin und Adrenalin sowie dem Hautpigment Melanin. Die Unfähigkeit, Phe zu metabolisieren, ist mit der Erbkrankheit Phenylketonurie (PKU) verbunden. Phe macht ungefähr 4 % der Aminosäurereste in Proteinen aus und ist an stabilisierenden Aren-Aren-Wechselwirkungen beteiligt, wird aber auch mit der Bildung von Amyloidose in Zusammenhang gebracht.
