Carvacrol is a monoterpene present in the essential oil of a number of plants and has been widely used in traditional medicine because it is considered to have a range of therapeutic effects including in relation to respiratory disease. To conduct a systematic review and meta‐analysis to assess the anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant activities of carvacrol when used in the treatment of respiratory disorders. A comprehensive literature search using Scopus, MEDLINE‐PubMed, Cochrane and Web of Science was undertaken. Papers related to the anti‐inflammatory or antioxidant properties of carvacrol in the treatment of an injury in the respiratory system in in vivo studies and published in the period up to and including August 2019. A total of 152 studies were initially identified, with only 17 meeting the inclusion criteria. Five of the studies were performed in humans, and 12 were performed in rodents. Among the 17 studies included in the systematic review, we performed the meta‐analysis with nine of the studies with animals. Carvacrol had a positive effect on the reduction of interleukin (IL)‐1β, IL‐4, IL‐8 and malondialdehyde (MDA); however, the analysis indicated that carvacrol had no effect on IL‐6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF‐α), probably due to the methodological quality of the studies and their heterogeneity. Current evidence supports the antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory effects of carvacrol, but its relationship with the reduction of some inflammatory mediators in animals with lung injury needs further elucidation.
Invasive plants may present allelopathic substances that interfere with the germination and initial development of seedlings of various species. The objective of this study is to evaluate the physiological quality of cabbage and tomato seeds in the presence of different concentrations of purple nutsedge extract. The seeds were left to germinate in different substrates. Individual experiments were performed for both species. Five concentrations (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) of aqueous extract obtained from tubers of Cyperus rotundus were used. The seeds of each species were placed to germinate in three types of substrates (sand, commercial, and paper). Germination, normal seedlings, abnormal seedlings, non-germinated seeds, germination speed index, and accelerated aging were evaluated. A completely randomized experiment with a 3 × 5 factorial design (three substrates and five concentrations of purple nutsedge extract) was conducted with four replications. For the substrates, the means were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. Polynomial regression analyses were carried out for concentrations of purple nutsedge extract. Cyperus rotundus exerts allelopathic effects on the germination of tomato and cabbage seeds. As the concentration of the tuber extract increases, the inhibitory effect increases, thus reducing germination and seed vigor in the different substrates. The commercial substrate for tomato and the paper substrate for cabbage may minimize the allelopathic effects of Cyperus rotundus extract during germination of seeds.
Child work in the street This article presents data of two researches into child work in the street which identify the risks that children and adolescents are submitted. In the first research, performed with a sample of 26 children and adolescents of both sexes, the qualitative methodology was used and the territorialization, the systematic observation and semistructured interviews were used as techniques. These last ones were analyzed according to the thematic content analysis of Bardin (1977). The second research was performed with a sample of 81 children and adolescents of both sexes, and the quantitative methodology was used. As an instrument, a questionnaire was used and treated through the software SPSS and through the descriptive statistics. Both researches have presented similar characteristics regarded to the tasks, to the profiles and to the risks. The more common risks are: physical (temperature); chemical (pollution); biological (virus); ergonomic (forced corporal positions and intense rhythms); social (the work won't give professional formation for the future); psychological (cognitive: difficulties with the accompaniment and the acting of the school and affective process: feelings of inability).
