Background Cycling is a physical exercise that is widely performed to improve physical fitness. Regular physical exercise will lead to adaptations to exercise. This adaptation is useful in suppressing the production of reactive oxygen stress (ROS) generated in response to cellular metabolism that uses oxygen. Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) plays a role in increasing the production of ROS, thus, when the concentration is low, it would lead to an improvement in physical fitness. This study aims to compare levels of TGF-β1 between recreational cyclists and sedentary groups. In addition, this research also compares several other parameters, which are fasting blood sugar levels and lipid profiles (triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol) between cyclists and sedentaries. Methods This was an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The research subjects consisted of 2 groups, each consisting of 21 participants, namely the recreational cyclist and the sedentary group. Anthropometric examinations were carried out, including body weight, height, body mass index, waist circumference, and body fat percentage. Fasting blood glucose concentration and lipid profile (Triglyceride – TG , Total Cholesterol – Total C , HDL Cholesterol – HDL-C , and LDL Cholesterol – LDL-C ) were determined by the enzymatic colorimetric methods, and TGF-β1 levels were determined using the fluorescence of specific antibodies for TGF-β1 (pg/ml) using ELISA method. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS v. 25. Results The anthropometric variables, other than body height, did not differ significantly between the two groups, so did the fasting blood glucose concentration. Nevertheless, the lipid profile (TG, Total C, HDL-C and LDL-C) were found to be significantly better in the cyclist group (p < 0.05). The mean level of TGF-β1 in recreational cyclists was 8, 908.48 pg/ml, lower than the control group, 10, 229.28 pg/ml. The results of the unpaired t -test showed significant mean differences between the two groups, (p = 0.001; p < 0.05). Conclusion The levels of TGF-β1 in the recreational cyclist group were lower than the sedentary group. Regular physical exercise will trigger exercise adaptations that can suppress latent TGF-β1 activation.
Antropometrik dan kebugaran kardiorespirasi dapat memberikan informasi penting tentang kondisi kesehatan seseorang. Penelitian ini menilai korelasi antara parameter antropometrik yang meliputi indeks massa tubuh (kg/m2), persentase lemak tubuh (%), dan lingkar pinggang (cm) dengan kebugaran kardiorespirasi yang diukur melalui ambilan oksigen maksimal (VO2maks). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian analitik observasional dengan metode cross sectional. Subjek penelitian adalah 82 orang mahasiswi FK Unram yang diperoleh dengan metode purposive sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi antara persentase lemak tubuh dan lingkar pinggang dengan kebugaran kardiorespirasi, masing-masing dengan p = 0,02; r = -256 dan p = 0.026; r = -245. Tidak terdapat korelasi antara indeks massa tubuh dengan kebugaran kardiorespirasi dengan p = 0.231 (p>0.05). Persentase lemak tubuh dan lingkar pinggang berkorelasi negatif dengan kebugaran kardiorespirasi, yang berarti semakin tinggi persentase lemak tubuh dan lingkar pinggang maka kebugaran kardiorespirasi yang dimiliki semakin rendah. Persentase lemak tubuh dan lingkar pinggang secara tidak langsung dapat menjadi indikator kebugaran kardiorespirasi.
Lombok Barat sebagai salah satu kabupaten dengan prevalensi stunting yang tinggi memiliki angka kejadian 25,2% pada tahun 2018. Meskipun tren stunting di Lombok Barat menurun, namun salah satu daerah di Desa Mekar Sari, Narmada, didapatkan data balita stunting yang cukup tinggi yaitu mencapai 30,5%. Stunting merupakan isu nasional bahkan global mengenai kekurangan gizi kronis. Masih banyak kesalahpahaman tentang pola pangan bergizi pada keluarga. Informasi penting yang sering mereka lewatkan adalah pentingnya makanan sehat bergizi dengan keterjangkauan mereka. Hal ini disebabkan karena sempitnya pengertian akan gizi yang selalu diartikan dengan makanan yang serba mahal. Banyak bayi dan anak yang diberi bubur kosong karena ketidaktahuan orang tua mengenai pentingnya gizi bagi anak mereka. Pemberian motivasi dan pelatihan pembuatan makanan bergizi (khususnya makanan pendamping ASI). Kehadiran peserta pelatihan 100%. Terjadi peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan ibu/pengasuh balita dan kader mengenai MPASI, rata-rata nilai pengetahuan pretest adalah 67,5 dan rata-rata nilai posttest adalah 94,5. Kemampuan peserta juga dapat dilihat dari agenda lomba MPASI yang menghadirkan resep sederhana sehat. Pelatihan pembuatan MPASI secara hands on efektif meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan ibu/pengasuh balita dan kader.
Infertility is a problem for husband and wife, in the last 20 years the number of infertile couples has tended to increase by around 6.5 million pairs. The infertile couple can use the intrauterine insemination method to obtain offspring if a conventional method approach cannot be performed. Insemination requires a sperm preparation stage in which there are centrifugation and resuspension procedures that tend to produce excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). Excessive ROS will damage the motility of the spermatozoa. This study aims to prove the addition of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) as an antioxidant in the process of sperm preparation to improve and maintain better sperm motility. This research is a laboratory study with an experimental research design. The sample consisted of 10 infertile men who visited the Andrology section of the Sayyidah Jakarta Mother and Child Hospital (RSIA), where each ejaculate from the patient would be divided into 3 groups namely (k1) fresh semen as a control group, (k2) sperm preparation group without ALA, (k3) group of sperm preparation with the addition of ALA. The motility of spermatozoa was observed with the WHO 1999 method for 4 hours in units of percent. Progressive motility in k3 (47.95 ± 3.617) was higher than in k2 (38.05 ± 3.278) statistically significantly different after 3 hours of observation (p<0.0001). Progressive motility in k3 (78.8 ± 5.841) was higher than k1 (56.55 ± 7.511) from the initial observation (p <0.0001). The progressive motility of k2 (76.05 ± 6.768) was higher than k1 (56.55 ± 7.511) from the start of the observation (0.0001). It can be concluded that the addition of ALA in the sperm preparation process increases and maintains progressive motility that is better than sperm preparation without ALA addition after 3 hours of observation.
Background: Body composition, is one of the factors that play a role in physical fitness. Body composition can be measured by calculating body fat percentage and waist-hip circumference ratio. Excessive body fat, usually will have a negative effect on physical fitness. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between body fat percentage and waist-hip circumference ratio with physical fitness.Methods: This study is a descriptive analytic study with a cross sectional design. The subjects were 82 medical students of Universitas Mataram who met the research criteria. Body fat percentage was measured by body composition monitor and physical fitness obtained from maximal oxygen uptake values (VO2max) that were calculated from the results of the Queen College Step Test. Data were analyzed by using the Pearson correlation test.Results: The results showed that the mean of body fat percentage, waist-hip circumference ratio, and VO2max were 28.3 kg/m2, 0.87 cm, and 37.7 ml/kg/minute, respectively. There was a significant correlation between body fat percentage and physical fitness (p = 0.02; r = -0.256) while there was no significant correlation between the waist-hip circumference ratio and physical fitness (p ≥ 0.05).Conclusion: The higher the body fat percentage, the lower the level of physical fitness. Latar belakang: Komposisi tubuh, merupakan salah satu faktor yang berperan dalam kebugaran fisik. Komposisi tubuh dapat diukur dengan menghitung persentase lemak tubuh dan rasio lingkar pinggang-lingkar pinggul. Seseorang yang memiliki kadar lemak tubuh yang berlebih, hampir selalu akan memberikan efek negatif terhadap kebugaran fisik. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui korelasi antara persentase lemak tubuh dan rasio lingkar pinggang-lingkar pinggul dengan kebugaran fisik.Metode: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian analitik deskriptif dengan desain cross sectional. Subjek penelitian adalah 82 mahasiswi Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Mataram yang memenuhi kriteria penelitian. Dilakukan pengukuran persentase lemak tubuh dengan body composition monitor, pengukuran lingkar pinggang dan pinggul, dan nilai kebugaran fisik diperoleh dari nilai ambilan oksigen maksimal (VO2max) yang dihitung dari hasil Queen College Step Test. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan uji korelasi Pearson.Hasil: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rerata persentase lemak tubuh, rasio lingkar pinggang-lingkar pinggul, dan VO2max subjek masing-masing adalah 28,3 kg/m2, 0,87 cm, dan 37,7 ml/kg/menit. Terdapat korelasi bermakna antara persentase lemak tubuh dengan kebugaran fisik (p = 0,02; r = -0,256) sementara tidak terdapat korelasi bermakna antara rasio lingkar pinggang-lingkar pinggul dengan kebugaran fisik.Simpulan: Semakin tinggi persentase lemak tubuh maka semakin rendah tingkat kebugaran fisiknya.
