Digital Storytelling (DST) is defined as telling stories using digital means. It has been initially applied for diverse purposes, including in community development, therapeutic benefits, and as an aid in teaching and learning. DST has recently been broadly used on social media platforms for marketing, running campaigns, journalism, and much more. However, no comprehensive systematic or thematic review of DST in social media has been conducted. Accordingly, this paper aims to provide a thematic review of DST in social media. The thematic review was carried out on 50 articles published from 2016 to 2021. These 50 discrete studies were selected because they met the inclusion criteria based on the research question of this review. The thematic review used ATLAS.ti as a tool to assist the review process. The results indicated that DST in social media was appropriate for marketing, including branding and advertising. Besides, using DST in social media over the years for education, training, professional development, community development and services, running campaigns, and therapy has significantly impacted these areas. Across the research articles, including case studies and essays, authors have reported several benefits of using DST in social media.
Folktale is part of people's culture and heritage that represents the identity of a society. Malaysia is prosperous with folktale, which is traditionally diffused verbally from generation to generation. Inopportunely, this heritage is slowly being forgotten by the younger generations especially by teenagers. The study aims to safeguard local folktale through an adventure game made for teenagers. In the context of the study, Bawang Putih Bawang Merah was selected. The study seeks to discover the adventure game's elements from the game guideline and from the user (teenagers). Once found, it is a question of how both the elements can be employed to design and develop the folktale adventure game branded as Orkid Emas in the study. Based on the definitive version of the game, it is a question of obtaining the teenagers' feedback about the game's design and development and safeguarding aspects. The methods employed in the study are the formal and semi-structured interview, document analysis, flowboarding and prototyping. The results of the study show that both the elements of the adventure game from the guidelines and users were ascertained. The Orkid Emas adventure game was successfully designed and developed using the combination of the elements. At large, positive feedback was obtained from select representing teenagers regarding the Orkid Emas' design and development, and folktale safeguarding aspects.
<p class="SPIEabstractbodytext">Dysarthria is a neurological disorder that damages of motor speech articulation.Young children who suffered from this disorder have no problem with their cognition, but they have difficulties to speak out their words. They could not have an accurate and smooth communication with their family and friends due to this disorder. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the user acceptance of an interactive speaking tool in the form of a mobile application named 'Let's Talk Now' which was designed with redundant multimedia elements for the use of dysarthric children aged 3 to 7 years old. This mobile appwas designed and developed as an early intervention to help the dysarthric who are facing problem to communicate and enable them to be understood by others. It focuses on daily usable conversation terms for family, greeting and expressions, places, ordering food and beverages, activities and asking for help. This study involved 15 respondents who are related to dysarthria namely therapists, parents, and teacher of dysarthric children. The 'Let's Talk Now' mobile app’s acceptance was evaluated using the USE (Usefulness, Satisfaction and Ease of Use) Questionnaire (Lund, 2001) which was used to measure its user acceptance. The findings described that all of the respondents agreed that the 'Let's Talk Now' mobile app is usable and suitable in helping the communication between dysarthric children and people.</p>
Malaysian folktales are one of the intangible cultural heritages that mirror and carries the lineage of the past generations to the present. It deserves to be preserved systematically but thus far; such effort is scarce if not lacking in this country. Consequently, a study is conducted to create a structural classification of the folktales with an aim to preserve such valuable heritage. Nevertheless, before the classification begins, an important task precedes which are an identification of the Malaysian folktales in a form of literary sources. The identification taskis guided by a combination of two qualifying factors: an operational definition established in the study and also an ownership of the folktales. Ultimately, this paper presents the method employed in the identification process and also the number of the accepted and excluded Malaysian folktales along with the titles of the folktales as findings of the process.
