This study was conducted because of the low level of students’ reading skill. The reading strategies and the reading frequencies were assumed as the factors affecting students’ reading skill. The aim of this study was to describe and to analyze the contribution of reading strategies and reading frequencies toward students’ reading comprehension skill. This study used the quantitative method with the descriptive correlational design. The population was 3000 students who attended Bahasa Indonesia subject in Universitas Negeri Padang, and 353 students were taken as samples by using proportional stratified random sampling. The instruments of this study were reading strategies scale, reading frequencies scale and a reading comprehension test which has been valid and reliable. Based on research findings and discussion, the following can be concluded: (1) reading strategies contributed significance and positively to the students' comprehension reading skill which is 19.6% (R = 0.443 R2 = 0.196 and p = 0.000), i.e. reading strategies contributed directly toward the skills of reading comprehension. Therefore, the higher the reading strategies, the better the reading comprehension skills of the students; (2) reading strategies contributed significance toward the students' reading comprehension skills of 33.1% (R = 0.575 R2 = 0.331 and p = 0.000), i.e. reading frequencies contributed directly to reading comprehension skills. Therefore, the better the reading frequencies, the better the reading comprehension skills of the students; (3) reading strategies and the reading frequencies together contributed significance toward the students' reading comprehension skills of 33.2% (R = 0.575, R2 = 0.332 and p = 0.000), i.e. reading strategies and reading frequencies together contributed directly to the comprehension reading skill. Therefore, the higher the reading strategies and reading frequencies will be the better the reading comprehension skill of the students.
This research article contains a discussion about the cultural values legends folktale of Minangkabau people's in West Sumatra. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The legend folktale of Minangkabau people's in West Sumatra was obtained from the narrative of informants. Categorical data is formulated through a search of the motive structure and role function of the Minangkabau legend's folklore in West Sumatra that has been collected. The study of legends folktale of Minangkabau people's in West Sumatra uses the theory of cultural values or social functions of literary texts as used by Danandjaja (1984),

The object of the research is the text of the Syair bimbingan rohani. The method used in this study is adjusted to the stages of research. In the data collection stage, that used field study methods. In the data processing stage, that used the descriptive. At the stage of transliteration used the transliteration method, and the translation used the translation method.The results of this study are (a) describing the text of the Syair bimbingan rohani, (b) the presentation of the script from the text of the Syair bimbingan rohani which can be read and understood by the society, (c) the presentation of the text of the Syair bimbingan rohani adapted to the Spelling of the Language Indonesia (EBI). This text reflects about how to educate the heart and soul to understanding that is called Happy Life According to Islam, blessed by Allah, that starts from nurturing the tongue, leading the physical realm, guarding the eyes, keeping the ears, guarding the feet, how to keep an eye on the spiritual realm or the heart, and both parts, the second is upbringing, the friend's question to the prophet, and the third part is upbringing. so, In the text of the Syair bimbingan rohani is found in the old Malay language and some Minangkabau language vocabulary which is maintained to protect the purity of the old vocabulary.Keywords: Philology, scripture, transliteration, translation
This study aimeds to describe the form of mental revolution in NyanyianPanjangBujang Si Undang which is viewed from six aspects tunjuk ajar, namely faith to God, honesty, intelligence, integrity, caring, and nationality. This study was a qualitative research using descriptive method. The data in this study were the character of educational value from the narrator, characters' utterance and characters' act which werecollected through format of data inventory. The data were analyzed based on Miles dan Hubeman's models through three steps; data reduction, data display and conclusion. There are six forms mental revolution on the characters of educational value in NyanyianPanjangBujang Si Undangnamely faith to God, honesty, intelligence, integrity, caring, and nationality. Therefore, NyanyianPanjangBujang Si Undang as oral tradition inheritance can be used as the alternative in supporting the education from local wisdom of Melayu society to solve the problems of morality and ethic.
This research had a purpose to describe Social Structure and Function of Legend of Sampuraga Story. The theory used by researchers in this research was folklore theory. The type of this research is qualitative research with description method which is explaining facts explicitly obtained from research object. To be able to describe the Social Structure and Function of the Legend of Sampuraga, this research is done by analyzing the data as an object with the following steps. (1) to describe the Structure of Folklore Legend of Sampuraga. (2) to describe the socio-function of the folklore of the Samapuraga legend. Structures are elements that build a ceruta, there are elements that are (1) characterizations, (2) style of language, (3) events and plot, (4) point of view, (5) background, and (6) theme and mandate. Furthermore, social function is a form of community belief to folklore they have and become a separate function in their social life. The social functions are (1) as a means of entertainment, (2) as a means of education (3) a means of social control, (4) social solidarity inauguration, and (5) group identity. Based on data analysis conducted, it can be concluded that there are only 5 elements in the Structure of Folklore Legend because the point of view is not found in the folklore Legend Sampuraga.
