Chemical matricectomy with sodium hydroxide is an easy method in the treatment of ingrown nails, with low morbidity and high success rates. There was no difference between 1-minute and 2-minute applications in terms of recurrence during the long-term follow-up. Chemical matricectomy with 1-minute application of sodium hydroxide showed high success in terms of long-term follow-up results.
syndrome (Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptom) is characterized by the presence of at least three of the following: fever, rash, eosinophilia, atypical circulating lymphocytes, lymphadenopathy and hepatitis. 1 The estimated frequency of DRESS syndrome varies between 1/1000-1/10000, and the mortality rate prediction is 10%. 1 The diagnosis of DRESS should be kept in mind when a skin rash, fever, hypereosinophilia and organ involvement is present. Liver is the most common affected organ. Cutaneous manifestations generally occur between 2 and 6 weeks aſter the first dose of culprit drug. 2 Besides the systemic glucocorticoid therapy, intravenous immunoglobulin therapy is essential for life-threatening forms.
Ingrown toenails are seen most commonly in young adults, and they can seriously affect daily life. Partial nail avulsion with chemical matrixectomy, generally by using either sodium hydroxide or phenol, is one of the most effective treatment methods. Known complications of phenol matrixectomy are unpredictable tissue damage, prolonged postoperative drainage, increased secondary infection rates, periostitis, and poor cosmetic results. To our knowledge, there have been no reports about the complications related to sodium hydroxide matrixectomy. Herein, we describe three patients who developed nail dystrophy, allodynia, and hyperalgesia after sodium hydroxide matrixectomy.
Despite all efforts of early diagnosis, metastatic melanoma still has a poor prognosis and remains a challenge for physicians to treat. In recent years, improved knowledge of the pathophysiology and a better understanding of the role of the immune system in tumour control have led to the development and approval of several immunotherapies and targeted therapies. The introduction and Food and Drug Administration approval of immune checkpoint inhibitor antibodies and targeted therapies has dramatically improved the clinical outcomes for patients with advanced melanoma. In this review, results of these recently developed and approved therapies for metastatic melanoma were presented.
