This paper, originally presented at the ABCA 1971 annual convention, deals with management's responsibilities for organizational communication systems. Internal management can design, create, and maintain a communication system that increases the probability of greater organizational effectiveness. The material was accompanied by visual aids, here only roughly represented in type. THIS PAPER AIMS TO EXPLORE the nature of management's responsibilities in the field of organizational communication analysis. This objective is pursued by first clarifying the meaning of &dquo;organizational communication&dquo; and &dquo;organizational communication analysis&dquo; (Exhibits I-VI ); and then by concentrating on the subject of management's role in the area so defined (Exhibits VII-IX).
ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATIONSeveral concepts of organizational communication are presented for the purpose of identifying the particular meaning under study. The selected concept is described as the personnel-interaction segment of coordinative-intemal communication. This concept includes the internal communication elements that are generally common to all units of an organization, and excludes the following areas of organizational communication: ( i ) the external forms involved in public relations, selling, advertising and correspondence with customers, suppliers, and other outside parties; (2) the specialized internal communication distinctive to particular departments of organizations such as engineering, accounting, and data processing; and (3) the communication techniques and methods associated with management information systems-i.e., programmed manual and machine procedures regulating activities that include the normal processing of customer requirements, the steps required in theissuance of supplier purchase orders, and a multitude of other oral and written communication operations amenable to substantial standardization (Exhibit I). at UNIV OF MASSACHUSETTS on March 15, 2015 job.sagepub.com Downloaded from
40In order to illustrate the particular activities included under this particular definition of organizational communication, specific written and oral communication activities are noted, and classified as individual-centered, small-group-centered, and organizational-centcred internal-communication vehicles (Exhibit II).Management analyses of communication are illustrated in part by ' relating organizational policies and communication activities (Exhibit III); and classifying communication activities in a matrix involving communication levels and communication objectives (Ex-. hibit IV).
