Recently, we reported that group subjective measures of presence as well as observers' postural responses are sensitive to increasing the realism of a display with motion content, by the addition of stereoscopic information, using a 20-inch stereoscopic screen with an effective horizontal eld of view of 28 deg. (Freeman, Avons, Meddis, Pearson, & IJsselsteijn, 2000). The experiment presented here employed a large projection display with a 50 deg. horizontal eld of view showing a rally car traversing a curved track at speed. The independent variables included image motion and stereoscopic presentation as within-subjects factors and screen size as a between-subjects factor. Dependent variables included subjective measures of presence, vection, involvement, and sickness, as well as observers' lateral postural responses, which served as a candidate objective corroborative measure of presence. Results demonstrated a noisy yet positive effect of stereoscopic presentation on the lateral postural responses. Post-test subjective ratings revealed a signi cant effect of stereoscopic presentation on the subjective judgments of presence, but not on those of vection, involvement, or sickness. Image motion had a large and signi cant effect on the subjective judgments of presence, vection, and involvement. The effect of image motion was considerably larger than that of stereoscopic viewing. By comparing results between experiments, a large effect of screen size on subjective presence ratings could be demonstrated, but only for the video stimulus that contained motion. The postural response measure did not differentiate between screen sizes, thus limiting its utility as an objective corroborative measure of presence, although further research is required to be able to be more rm in our conclusion regarding this issue.
Background: One of the main ergonomic problems during surgical procedures is the surgeonÕs awkward body posture, often accompanied by repetitive movements of the upper extremities, increased muscle activity, and prolonged static head and back postures. In addition, surgeons perform surgery so concentrated that they tend to neglect their posture. These observations suggest the advantage of supporting the surgeonÕs body during surgical procedures. This study aimed to design a body support and to test its potential. Methods: The optimum working condition for a surgeon is a compromise between the spine and arm positions and the level of effort and fatigue experienced performing a procedure. The design vision of the Medisign group has led to the development of an ergonomic body support for surgeons that is suitable for use during both open and minimally invasive procedures. The feasibility of the newly designed ergonomic body support was assessed during seven surgical procedures. Electromyography (EMG) was performed for back and leg muscles using the body support in an experimental setting. Results: Six of seven participating surgeons indicated that the body support was comfortable, safe, and simple to use. The EMG results show that supporting the body is effective in reducing muscle activity. The average reduction using chest support was 44% for the erector spinae muscle, 20% for the semitendinosus muscle, and 74% for the gastrocnemius muscle. The average muscle reduction using semistanding support was 5% for the erector spinae, 12% for the semitendinosus muscle, and for 50% for the gastrocnemius muscle. Conclusion:The results of this study imply that supporting the body is an effective way to reduce muscle activity, which over the long term may reduce physical problems and discomfort. Additionally, the product supports the surgeon in his natural posture during both open and minimally invasive procedures and can easily be adapted to the current layout of the operating theater.
Millions of photos are shared online daily, but the richness of interaction compared with face-to-face (F2F) sharing is still missing. While this may change with social Virtual Reality (socialVR), we still lack tools to measure such immersive and interactive experiences. In this paper, we investigate photo sharing experiences in immersive environments, focusing on socialVR. Running context mapping (N=10), an expert creative session (N=6), and an online experience clustering questionnaire (N=20), we develop and statistically evaluate a questionnaire to measure photo sharing experiences. We then ran a controlled, within-subject study (N=26 pairs) to compare photo sharing under F2F, Skype, and Facebook Spaces. Using interviews, audio analysis, and our questionnaire, we found that socialVR can closely approximate F2F sharing. We contribute empirical findings on the immersiveness differences between digital communication media, and propose a socialVR questionnaire that can in the future generalize beyond photo sharing.
In this paper, two experiments are presented that were aimed to investigate the effects of stereoscopic filming parameters and display duration on observers' judgements of naturalness and quality of stereoscopic images. The paper first presents a literature review of temporal factors in stereoscopic vision, with reference to stereoscopic displays. Several studies have indicated an effect of display duration on performance-oriented (criterion based) measures. The experiments reported here were performed to extend the study of display duration from performance to appreciation-oriented measures. In addition, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of manipulating camera separation, convergence distance, and focal length on perceived quality and naturalness.In the first experiment, using display durations of both 5 and 10 s, 12 observers rated naturalness of depth and quality of depth for stereoscopic still images. The results showed no significant main effect of display duration. A small yet significant shift between naturalness and quality was found for both duration conditions. This result replicated earlier findings, indicating that this is a reliable effect, albeit content-dependent. The second experiment was performed using display durations ranging from 1 to 15 s. The results of this experiment showed a small yet significant effect of display duration. Whereas longer display durations do not have a negative impact on the appreciative scores of optimally reproduced stereoscopic images, observers do give lower judgements to monoscopic images and stereoscopic images with unnatural disparity values as display duration increases. In addition, the results of both experiments provide support for the argument that stereoscopic camera toe-in should be avoided if possible.
