Background: Collaboration between health professionals is needed to improve health services. The collaboration can be applied to the education system through the Interprofessional Education (IPE) concept. This study aimed to examine students’ perception on the IPE implementation. Methods: This was a descriptive study using cross-sectional method. The study sample were 300 undergraduate students in Medical Faculty Andalas University (MFAU). It consisted of 190 medical students, 72 psychology students, and 38 midwifery students. The sample was determined by proportionate stratified random sampling method. The research instrument used was Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS) questionnaire. Results: The 252 students (84%) showed positive perception on IPE implementation. The highest percentage (90%) of the component of perception was actual cooperation and the component of understanding of others’ profession had the lowest percentage (51%). Midwifery students had the highest percentage of perception (92.1%), while the lowest percentage of perception was showed by psychology students (72.2%). The perception tended to increase in perception from first-year (85.7%) to second-year (89.9%) and declined in third-year students (76%).Conclusion: Students of MFAU having a good perception on the IPE implementation. However, there is a lack of understanding of others’ profession that needs to be addressed and improved.
Kata kunci: remaja, indeks massa tubuh, aktivitas fisik Background: The health of people including adolescents is influenced by the level of physical activity of a person. An individual with high physical activity level usually has a normal body mass index (BMI). Objectives:To determine the association of physical activity level and BMI in students of SMP Negeri 1 Padang. Methods: This research was a cross-sectional study in 152 junior high school students (50 males and 102 females). The survey was conducted on March 2020. Body weight and height were measured, BMI was calculated and classified into normal/ low and high BMI. The level of physical activity was evaluated by using the Baecke index questionnaire and classified into low and moderate activity level. Data were analyzed by using the Chi-square test and result was considered significant at p-value <0.05. Result: Most students had normal or low BMI (64.5%) and had low physical activity level (59.9%). There was a significant correlation between physical activity level and BMI (P = 0.03). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the physical activity level and BMI is associated in students of SMP Negeri 1 Padang. Keyword: adolescent; body mass index; physical activity
Background. Cigarette smoke may cause harm not only to active smokers but also to those in their vicinity (passive smokers). Cigarettes contain nicotine, which triggers the release of catecholamines, affecting lipid metabolism. Exposure to cigarette smoke may increase serum LDL cholesterol levels in active and passive smokers. Objective. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between serum cotinine (a metabolite of nicotine) and LDL cholesterol levels in young adults. Methods. A cross-sectional study was performed, the analysis included 122 Andalas University students, aged 17.5 - 25.9 years. Demographic data, smoking degree, serum cotinine, and LDL cholesterol levels were collected. Bivariate analysis was carried out individually on each independent and confounding variables to the dependent variable, followed by multiple hierarchical regressions analysis. Results. Serum cotinine levels in this study was 10,5 ± 6.8 ng/ml (mean±SD), and serum LDL cholesterol levels were 65,5±18,5 mg/dl (mean±SD). There was no significant correlation between serum cotinine and LDL cholesterol levels in bivariate analysis. However, serum cotinine levels had a nonlinear correlation with serum LDL cholesterol levels in the regression model that included body mass index (BMI) as the confounding variable. The adjusted r2 value in this study is 0,066, the standardized β coefficient for the BMI is 0,197 (p = 0.028), for the serum cotinine levels is -0,830 (p = 0.007), and for the squared serum cotinine levels is 0,753 (p = 0.014).
Plastic is a global problem; plastic pollution production reaches 350 million tons annually. This plastic pollution will be degraded into microplastic. This microplastic will pollute the environment and negatively impacted health if exposed too much. Recent research has found microplastics in clothes, toys, and even food. The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Andalas conducts outreach to the public to enhance the general public's understanding of microplastics and their impact on health. The outreach activity began with filling out a pre-test to assess the public's understanding of microplastics. Followed by education about microplastic exposure, the dangers of microplastics, and education about a healthy lifestyle to reduce sources of microplastic exposure. The event ended with filling out a post-test by participants. Paired t-test analysis on pre-test and post-test data showed an increase in public understanding regarding microplastics, sources of exposure, health impacts and ways to reduce microplastic exposure. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the provision of public service can increase public understanding regarding the sources of microplastics and their impact on health and encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle that minimizes exposure to microplastics.
