This study examined mobile phone apps and the utilization of library services in university of Calabar library, Nigeria. Four objectives and four hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Survey research design was used. The population of the study constituted of all registered library users in the 2015/2016 academic session. The population was 4,265 registered users. A sample of 225 registered users was selected using purposive and accidental sampling techniques. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Pearson product moment correlation analysis was employed to test the hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was a significant relationship between Tweeter apps and the utilization of library services, (r=0.57*, P<.05, df=223, rcritical=.138); there was a significant relationship between Whatsapp and the utilization of library services, (r=0.47*, P<.05, df=223, r-critical=.138); there is a significant relationship between Facebook apps and the utilization of library services, (r=0.59 ⃰ , P<.05,df=223,r-critical=.138); and there is a significant relationship between Skype apps and the utilization of library services, (r=0.51⃰ , P<.0.5, df=223, r-critical=.138). From the result of the study, it was recommended among others that the use of mobile phone apps as communication infrastructure should be encouraged in the University of Calabar Library.
This study was conducted in the University of Calabar Library, Calabar, Nigeria using survey research design. The population of the study consisted of all registered undergraduate library users between the 2014 and 2015. The total population of the study was 5,244 users. Accidental sampling technique was used to select 300 respondents who constituted the sample of the study. The study sought to ascertain if there is a state of apathy toward library resources and services in the University of Calabar library. The finding showed that the level of usage of library resources and services dropped significantly between 2012 and 2015. The books borrowed from the library and the number of registered Undergraduate library users within the same period showed a remarkable decline. Insufficient seats, attitude of library staff towards users, Erratic Power supply, Students access to personal computer and smart phones, low information literacy competencies of undergraduates and inadequate information resources were identified as reasons for the state of apathy towards the library. It was recommended in the study that: Libraries with perceived incidents alluding to the prevalence of users' apathy would have to resort to awareness and advocacy programmes to woo potential users back to the library. It is important to review the library use instruction programme, the services provided by the library and the attitude of Library staff towards users. There should be conscious efforts to correct any lapse arising from the review.
A survey of library use instruction programme and how it influences the pattern of utilization of library resources and services in the University of Calabar was carried out. The population of the study comprised undergraduate library users in the University of Calabar. Accidental sampling technique was used to select 320 respondents who constituted the sample of the study. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Three hundred and twenty (320) questionnaires were administered to the respondents in the six units of Readers Services Division of the library within a period of 6 days. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics (simple percentage %). The study found out, among others that, the perception of the Library Use Instruction Programme by undergraduates in the University of Calabar was high, resulting to high level of patronage of the library: 84 respondents (26.3 %) agreed that the programme equips users to make independent use of the library while 80 respondents (25 %) acknowledge that the skills acquired from the programme aids users academic performance. 70 respondents (21.9) perceive the programme as a means of diversifying users' knowledge while 66 respondents (20.6%) noted that the programme is a source of empowerment in information search and retrieval in a library. This was attributed to the possession of basic Library Use skills by undergraduates which were acquired during the Library Use Instruction Programme. It was recommended in the study that the instructional programme should run for both first and second semesters and it should be an independent credit carrying course under the General Studies Programme of the University of Calabar.
