Summary.A very important step within the coordinated multidisciplinary surgical treatment of polytraumatized patients is early, functionally stable osteosynthesis of the facial fractures. If this is performed, there is no need for intermaxillary fixation, which means no need for tracheostomies. Also, the patients are easier to feed. There are fewer surgical interventions and patients can be mobilized earlier. Besides these advantages during the early phase of treatment, late sequelae like disturbed occlusion, dish face, facial asymmetries, telecanthus, and hypertelorism can also be avoided.
