Low endogenous estrogen action causes several injuries. Medicinal plants, such as flaxseed and mulberry, contain substances that have been shown to be effective to the organism. The aim was to verify the effects of flaxseed and/or mulberry extracts on ovariectomized Wistar rats. The animals received supplements of extracts and estrogen or saline by gavage for 60 days and were weighed weekly. Vaginal wash, blood, pituitary, uterus, liver, and kidneys were collected. Phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of the extracts, lipid profile, uric acid, liver enzymes, and pituitary weight were measured. Histomorphometric for uterine wall and histopathological analyses for liver and kidney were performed. Flaxseed and mulberry extracts showed great antioxidant activity and large amounts of phenolic compounds. The treatment with extracts had less weight gain, increased pituitary weight, the predominance of vaginal epithelial cells, and reduced TC, LDL-c and lipase activity, similar to estrogen animals. Estrogen or flaxseed + mulberry animals reduced VLDL-c and TAG. HDL-c, uric acid, and liver enzymes did not differ. Estrogen or extracts demonstrated trophic action on the endometrial thickness and have not shown hepatotoxicity or nephrotoxicity. We suggested the beneficial effects of flaxseed and mulberry extract as an alternative to reduce and/or prevent the negative effects caused by low estrogenic action.
Background: Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide and is popular for its characteristic flavor and rich organoleptic properties. Aim: Based on published articles, the aims of this review are i) study the association between coffee consumption and benefits to human health; ii) the effects of coffee consumption on some pathologies; and iii) provide a description of coffee’s bioactive compounds. Discussion: Coffee presents bioactive compounds, which include phenolic compounds, especially chlorogenic acid (caffeoylquinic acid), trigonelline, and diterpenes, such as cafestol and kahweol. These compounds are related to the beneficial effects for human health, including high antioxidant activity, antimutagenic activity, hepatoprotective action, reduced incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, decreased incidence of inflammatory diseases, reduced menopausal symptoms, and others. Coffee’s bioactive compounds are caffeine, chlorogenic acid, trigonelline, cafestol and kahweol, which are closely related to coffee’s beneficial effects. Conclusion: The present review clarified that the benefits of moderate coffee consumption outweigh the associated risks.
Cancer is the transformation of healthy cells into tumor cells in a multistage process that can affect any organ of the body. This disease is the second leading cause of death globally. There are now more than 10 million cancer cases per year worldwide, and the most common occurs in the lung, breast, and colon. Several studies demonstrate that lifestyle and eating habits are directly related to tumor cells’ appearance, such as high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, and tobacco and alcohol use. It is widely believed that diet and nutrients can act as cancer risk-modifiers throughout the process of carcinogenesis, including initiation, promotion, progression, and/or conversion. Different plants have been the source of therapeutic agents. Plant-derived compounds have become indispensable for modern pharmacotherapy, and phenolic compounds are one of the most investigated due to their antitumor activity. Their cellular targets and mechanisms are compiled in the present work. Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites present in large quantities in medicinal herbs and dietary plants (e.g., fruits, vegetables, and spices). They possess a diverse range of beneficial biological activities, which contribute to their potent effects on inhibiting carcinogenesis. Some benefits include cell proliferation and angiogenesis inhibition and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimetastatic activities. Thus, the present review supports the recommendations for consuming foods and drinks rich in phenolic compounds to prevent and possibly treat cancer.
