Multi-view clustering (MVC) optimally integrates complementary information from different views to improve clustering performance. Although demonstrating promising performance in many applications, we observe that most of existing methods directly combine multiple views to learn an optimal similarity for clustering. These methods would cause intensive computational complexity and over-complicated optimization. In this paper, we theoretically uncover the connection between existing k-means clustering and the alignment between base partitions and consensus partition. Based on this observation, we propose a simple but effective multi-view algorithm termed {Multi-view Clustering via Late Fusion Alignment Maximization (MVC-LFA)}. In specific, MVC-LFA proposes to maximally align the consensus partition with the weighted base partitions. Such a criterion is beneficial to significantly reduce the computational complexity and simplify the optimization procedure. Furthermore, we design a three-step iterative algorithm to solve the new resultant optimization problem with theoretically guaranteed convergence. Extensive experiments on five multi-view benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed MVC-LFA.
The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins are a large family of transcription factors that control various developmental processes in eukaryotes, but the biological roles of most bHLH proteins are not very clear, especially in tomato. In this study, a PRE-like atypical bHLH gene was isolated and designated as SlPRE2 in tomato. SlPRE2 was highly expressed in immature-green fruits, moderately in young leaves, flowers, and mature-green fruits. To further research the function of SlPRE2, a 35 S:PRE2 binary vector was constructed and transformed into wild type tomato. The transgenic plants showed increased leaf angle and stem internode length, rolling leaves with decreased chlorophyll content. The water loss rate of detached leaves was increased in young transgenic lines but depressed in mature leaves. Besides, overexpression of SlPRE2 promoted morphogenesis in seedling development, producing light-green unripening fruits and yellowing ripen fruits with reduced chlorophyll and carotenoid accumulation in pericarps, respectively. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that expression of the chlorophyll related genes, such as GOLDEN 2-LIKE and RbcS, were decreased in unripening 35 S:PRE2 fruit, and carotenoid biosynthesis-related genes PHYTOENE SYNTHASE1A and ζ-CAROTENE DESATURASE in ripening fruit were also down-regulated. These results suggest that SlPRE2 affects plant morphology and is a negative regulator of fruit pigment accumulation.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer that shows a high mortality and increasing incidence. There are numerous successful treatment options for CRC, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy; however, their side effects and limitations are considerable. Probiotics may be an effective strategy for preventing and inhibiting tumour growth through stimulation of host innate and adaptive immunity. We investigated and compared potential anti-tumour immune responses induced by two isolated Lactobacillus strains, Lactobacillus plantarum A and Lactobacillus rhamnosus b, by pre-inoculating mice with lactobacilli for 14 days. Subsequently, subcutaneous and orthotopic intestinal tumours were generated in the pre-inoculated mice using CT26 murine adenocarcinoma cells and were assessed for response against the tumour. Our results indicated that oral administration with L. plantarum inhibited CT26 cell growth in BALB/c mice and prolonged the survival time of tumour-bearing mice compared with mice administered L. rhamnosus. L. plantarum produced protective immunity against the challenge with CT26 cells by increasing the effector functions of CD8+ and natural killer (NK) cell infiltration into tumour tissue, up-regulation of IFN-gamma (but not IL-4 or IL-17) production, and promotion of Th1-type CD4+ T differentiation. Consequently, our results suggest that L. plantarum can enhance the anti-tumour immune response and delay tumour formation.
The H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) has become increasingly concerning due to its role in severe economic losses in the poultry industry. Transmission of AIV to mammals, including pigs and humans, has accelerated efforts to devise preventive strategies. To develop an effective oral vaccine against H9N2 AIV, a recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum NC8 strain expressing the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of H9N2 AIV was constructed in this study. Mice were orally immunized with the recombinant NC8-pSIP409-HA strain, and sIgA, IgG and HI antibodies were produced by the NC8-pSIP409-HA strain, which also induced CD8(+) T cell immune responses. Most importantly, oral administration produced complete protection against challenge with mouse-adapted H9N2 virus. These results indicate that the recombinant NC8-pSIP409-HA was more effective at inducing the mucosal, humoral and cellular immune responses. Therefore, L. plantarum NC8-pSIP409-HA could become a promising oral vaccine candidate against H9N2 AIV.
